The Importance of Covering Vessels and Extinguishing Lamps

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of covering vessels, waterskins and extinguishing lamps to prevent the devil from entering.

Jabir reported Allah's Messenger ﷺ as saying: Cover vessels, waterskins, close the doors and extinguish the lamps, for the Satan does not loosen the waterskin, does not open the door and does not uncover the vessels. And if one amongst you fails to find (something) to cover it well, he should cover it by placing (a piece of) wood across it. Qutaiba did not mention the closing of the doors in the hadith transmitted by him.
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ‏"‏ غَطُّوا الإِنَاءَ وَأَوْكُوا السِّقَاءَ وَأَغْلِقُوا الْبَابَ وَأَطْفِئُوا السِّرَاجَ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لاَ يَحُلُّ سِقَاءً وَلاَ يَفْتَحُ بَابًا وَلاَ يَكْشِفُ إِنَاءً فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلاَّ أَنْ يَعْرُضَ عَلَى إِنَائِهِ عُودًا وَيَذْكُرَ اسْمَ اللَّهِ فَلْيَفْعَلْ فَإِنَّ الْفُوَيْسِقَةَ تُضْرِمُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْبَيْتِ بَيْتَهُمْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ قُتَيْبَةُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ ‏"‏ وَأَغْلِقُوا الْبَابَ

This hadith emphasizes the importance of covering vessels, waterskins and extinguishing lamps in order to protect oneself from the devil. It is narrated by Jabir who reported Allah's Messenger that he said that one should cover their vessels, waterskins and close doors as well as extinguish lamps because Satan does not loosen the waterskin, open doors or uncover vessels. If one cannot find something to cover it properly then they should place a piece of wood across it. This hadith teaches us that we must take precautionary measures against evil forces such as Satan by taking simple steps like covering our belongings and closing doors at night. It also teaches us to be mindful about our environment by not leaving things uncovered or leaving lights on unnecessarily which can attract unwanted attention from evil forces.
