Patience in Times of Calamity

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught a woman to be patient and have faith in Allah when she was grieving over a grave.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet passed by a woman who was weeping beside a grave. He told her to fear Allah and be patient. She said to him, "Go away, for you have not been afflicted with a calamity like mine". And she did not recognize him. Then she was informed that he was the Prophet . so she went to the house of the Prophet and there she did not find any guard. Then she said to him, "I did not recognize you". He said, "Verily, the patience is at the first stroke of a calamity".
حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ بِامْرَأَةٍ تَبْكِي عِنْدَ قَبْرٍ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ اتَّقِي اللَّهَ وَاصْبِرِي ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَتْ إِلَيْكَ عَنِّي، فَإِنَّكَ لَمْ تُصَبْ بِمُصِيبَتِي، وَلَمْ تَعْرِفْهُ‏.‏ فَقِيلَ لَهَا إِنَّهُ النَّبِيُّ ‏.‏ فَأَتَتْ باب النَّبِيِّ فَلَمْ تَجِدْ عِنْدَهُ بَوَّابِينَ فَقَالَتْ لَمْ أَعْرِفْكَ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ إِنَّمَا الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولَى

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of having patience and faith in Allah during times of calamity. The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by a woman who was weeping beside a grave and he told her to fear Allah and be patient. She did not recognize him at first but when she found out it was the Prophet (ﷺ) she went to his house where there were no guards. He then said that “Verily, the patience is at the first stroke of a calamity” which means that one should remain patient even before they are faced with any difficulty or hardship. This hadith teaches us that we should always have faith in Allah during difficult times as He will help us through them if we remain steadfast and patient. It also teaches us to never lose hope no matter how hard things may seem because with patience comes great reward from God Almighty.
