Sahih al-Bukhari 1281, 1282 (Book 23, Hadith 42) #1234
Mourning Periods According to Islam

SUMMARY: It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for any dead person more than three days, except her husband, for whom she should mourn four months and ten days.

Narrated Zainab bint Abi Salama: I went to Um Habiba, the wife of Prophet, who said, "I heard the Prophets saying, 'It is not legal for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for any dead person for more than three days except for her husband, (for whom she should mourn) for four months and ten days'". Later I went to Zainab bint Jahsh when her brother died; she asked for some scent, and after using it she said, "I am not in need of scent but I heard Allah's Messenger saying, 'It is not legal for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for more than three days for any dead person except her husband, (for whom she should mourn) for four months and ten days'. "

EXPLANATIONS:
According to this hadith, it is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for any dead person more than three days, except her husband, for whom she should mourn four months and ten days. This hadith teaches us that we must follow the laws of Allah as stated in the Quran. We must also remember that mourning is an important part of grieving but it should be done within limits set by Islam. We must also remember that our love and respect towards our deceased loved ones will remain even after their death so we can still show them love through prayers or other acts of worship such as charity or reciting Quran on their behalf.
