Sahih Muslim 1950 (Book 34, Hadith 71) #12147
Eating Lizards in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) felt disgusted when asked about eating lizards, but Umar b. al-Khattab reminded that the Prophet did not declare it to be unlawful and Allah has made it a source of benefit for more than one person.

Abu Zubair reported: I asked Jabir about ithe eating) of the lizard, whereupon he said: Don't eat that as he (the Holy Prophet) felt disgust. He (the narrator) said that Umar b. al-Khattab reminded: Allah's Apostle did not declare it to be unlawful. Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, has (made it a source) of benefit for more than one (persons). It is a common diet of the shepherds. Had it been with me, I would have eaten that.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect other creatures created by Allah ; Appreciate diversity among people's tastes ; Recognize our limited knowledge compared to God's infinite wisdom .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Islamic ruling on eating lizards. When asked about it, the Prophet Muhammad felt disgusted and did not declare it to be unlawful. However, Umar b. al-Khattab reminded that Allah has made this creature a source of benefit for more than one person and is a common diet of shepherds. This hadith teaches us that although we may feel repugnance towards certain things, we should still remember that Allah has created everything with wisdom and purpose; even if something does not appeal to us personally, there may still be benefits in them for others or even ourselves.
