Sahih Muslim 1949 (Book 34, Hadith 70) #12146
Refusing to Eat Unrecognizable Animals

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad refused to eat the flesh of a lizard because he was unsure if it was an animal from the past whose form had been distorted.

Abu Zubair reported that he heard Jabir b. 'Abdullah saying that there was presented to Allah's Messenger (the flesh) of the lizard, but he refused to eat that, saying: I do not know; perhaps it (lizard) might (be one of those natives of) the distant past whose (forms) had beer, distorted.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be careful when eating unfamiliar food or animals as you may not know what they are or where they come from .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's refusal to eat the flesh of a lizard. He did not know what kind of animal it was and so he chose not to eat it out of caution. This teaches us that we should be careful when eating unfamiliar food or animals as we may not know what they are or where they come from. We should also be aware that some animals may have changed in appearance over time and so we should be cautious when consuming them. Furthermore, this hadith shows us that even though something may look appetizing or desirable, if there is any doubt about its origin then it is best to avoid it altogether for our own safety and wellbeing.
