Punishment for Theft

SUMMARY: The punishment for theft is not to be carried out unless the stolen item is worth a quarter of a dinar or more.

'A'isha reported that she heard Allah's Apostle as saying: The hand of the thief may not be cut off but for a quarter of a dinar and upwards.

QUICK LESSONS:
Consider circumstances before punishing someone so justice can be served fairly and appropriately .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the punishment for theft. According to this hadith, the hand of a thief should not be cut off unless they have stolen something that is worth at least a quarter of a dinar. A dinar was an ancient form of currency and was equivalent to about 4 grams of gold. This means that if someone steals something that is worth less than 4 grams of gold, then they will not receive any physical punishment such as having their hand cut off. Instead, they may receive some other form of penalty such as being fined or jailed. This hadith teaches us that we should only punish people when it is absolutely necessary and when their actions are serious enough to warrant it. It also teaches us that we should always consider the circumstances before punishing someone so that justice can be served fairly and appropriately.
