Sahih Muslim 1503e (Book 27, Hadith 80) #11444
Emancipation of Slaves with Humanity

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the emancipation of slaves and how it should be done in a humane way.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Apostle as saying: He who emancipates his portion in a slave, full emancipation may be secured for him out of his property (if he has money) if he has enough property to meet (the required expenses), but if he has not enough property, the slave should be put to extra labour (in order to earn money for buying his freedom), but he should not be overburdened.

QUICK LESSONS:
Freeing one's slave out of one's own property if possible; Putting one's slave into extra labour without overburdening them; Treating one's slave with kindness and compassion when emancipating them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the emancipation of slaves, which was a common practice during the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It teaches us that if someone has enough money to free their slave, they should do so out of their own property. However, if they do not have enough money to free them, then they should put them to extra labour in order to earn money for buying their freedom. The important thing here is that the slave should not be overburdened or treated harshly while doing this extra labour. This hadith teaches us values such as kindness and compassion towards others, especially those who are less fortunate than us and are dependent on us for their freedom.
