Sahih Muslim 1661c (Book 27, Hadith 62) #11426
Kindness and Respect for Slaves

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of treating slaves with kindness and respect, as they are brothers to us.

Ma'rur b. Suwaid reported: I saw Abu Dharr wearing clothes, and his slave wearing similar ones. I asked him about it, and he narrated that he had abused a person during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon. him) and he reproached him for his mother. That person came to Allah's Apostle and made mention of that to him. Thereupon Allah's Apostle said: You are a person who has (remnants of) Ignorance in him. Your slaves are brothers of yours. Allah has placed them in your hand, and he who has his brother under him, he should feed him with what he eats, and dress him with what he dresses himself, and do not burden them beyond their capacities, and if you burden them, (beyond their capacities), then help them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of treating slaves with kindness and respect, as they are our brothers in humanity. It was narrated by Ma'rur b. Suwaid that he saw Abu Dharr wearing clothes, and his slave wearing similar ones. When asked about it, Abu Dharr told him that he had abused a person during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger and reproached him for his mother. The person then went to Allah's Apostle who said that one should not burden their slaves beyond their capacities, but rather help them if they do so accidentally or unintentionally. Furthermore, one should feed them what they eat themselves and dress them in what they dress themselves in - showing equality between master and slave despite their different statuses in society at the time. This hadith teaches us to treat all people equally regardless of social status or wealth; we must show kindness towards everyone we meet as we are all equal before God Almighty!
