Sahih Muslim 1656e (Book 27, Hadith 43) #11407
The Prophet's Umrah and Umar's Vow

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) performing Umrah from a place called Jairana, and Umar taking a vow of I'tikaf during the days of Ignorance.

Nafi' reported: A mention of Allah's Messenger observing 'Umra from ja'rina was made before Ibn 'Umar. He said: He did not enter into the state of Ihram from that (place), and Umar had taken a vow of observing I'tikaf for a night during the days of Ignorance. The rest of the hadith is the same.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek knowledge even before revelation came down; strive for spiritual growth through acts such as I’tikaf; perform religious pilgrimages like Umra if possible; devote oneself to Allah SWT .
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about two important events in Islamic history. Firstly, it mentions that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) performed an Umrah from a place called Jairana. An Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca which can be done at any time of year, unlike Hajj which must be done during specific months. Secondly, it mentions that Umar took a vow of I'tikaf during the days of Ignorance. I'tikaf is when one secludes themselves in a mosque for spiritual contemplation and worship for at least one day or night. During this period before Islam was revealed to mankind, people were living in ignorance as they did not have access to divine guidance yet; this period was known as 'the days of Ignorance'. Therefore, this hadith highlights how even before Islam was revealed people were still striving for spiritual growth through acts such as I'tikaf.
