Sahih Muslim 1640c (Book 26, Hadith 9) #11355
The Power of Vows

SUMMARY: Making a vow does not bring anything to a person that Allah has not already ordained for them, but it can coincide with destiny and cause someone to give something they would otherwise be unwilling to.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Apostle as saying: The vow does not bring anything near to the son of Adam which Allah has not ordained for him, but (at times) the vow coincides with Destiny, and this is how something is extracted from the miserly person, which that miser was not willing to give.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when making promises or commitments

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the power of making vows. A vow is when someone makes a promise or commitment to do something, usually in exchange for something else. In this hadith, it is explained that making a vow does not bring anything new into one's life that Allah has not already ordained for them. However, it can coincide with destiny and cause someone to give something they would otherwise be unwilling to give. This teaches us the importance of being mindful when making promises or commitments as we never know how our words may affect our lives in the future. It also reminds us that everything we have comes from Allah and He is the ultimate provider of all things.
