Taking Interest on Credit

SUMMARY: Interest can be taken on credit when the payment is not equal.

Ubaidullah b. Abu Yazid heard Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with them) as saying: Usama b. Zaid reported Allah's Apostle as saying: There can be an element of interest in credit (when the payment is not equal).

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive to repay debts in full and avoid taking out loans unless absolutely necessary .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the concept of taking interest on credit when the payment is not equal. It was narrated by Ubaidullah b. Abu Yazid who heard it from Ibn 'Abbas and Usama b. Zaid who reported it from Allah's Apostle that there can be an element of interest in credit when the payment is not equal. This means that if someone takes a loan and does not pay back an amount equivalent to what they borrowed, then they may have to pay extra as interest for taking out a loan in the first place. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to repay our debts in full and avoid taking out loans unless absolutely necessary as we may have to pay extra money if we do not repay them fully or on time.
