Sahih Muslim 1555a (Book 22, Hadith 16) #11101
Consideration for Others' Wealth

SUMMARY: Allah's Apostle forbade the sale of unripe fruits and taught us to be considerate of others' wealth.

Anas (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah's Apostle forbade the sale of the fruit of date-palms until it becomes mellow. We (some of the other narrators in the chain of transmitters) said: What does the word" mellow" mean? He said: (There the fruit) turns red or yellow. Don't you see if Allah had checked (the growth of) fruits; then what for the wealth of your brother would be permissible for you?

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect other people's possessions and do not take advantage or benefit from them without their permission.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about being considerate of others’ wealth. It was narrated by Anas ibn Malik, who reported that Allah's Apostle forbade the sale of unripe fruits until they become mellow. The companions asked what ‘mellow’ meant, and he replied that it means when the fruit turns red or yellow. He then said “Don't you see if Allah had checked the growth of fruits; then what for the wealth of your brother would be permissible for you?” This teaches us to be mindful and respectful towards other people’s possessions, as we should not take advantage or benefit from them without their permission. We should also remember that everything belongs to Allah, so we must not take more than our share without His permission either.
