Sahih al-Bukhari 111 (Book 3, Hadith 53) #111
Laws of Diyya, Ransom and Qisas

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the laws of Diyya, ransom for captives and that no Muslim should be killed in Qisas.

Narrated Ash-Shu'bi: Abu Juhaifa said, "I asked 'Ali, 'Have you got any book (which has been revealed to the Prophet apart from the Qur'an)?' 'Ali replied, 'No, except Allah's Book or the power of understanding which has been bestowed (by Allah) upon a Muslim or what is (written) in this sheet of paper (with me)'. Abu Juhaifa said, "I asked, 'What is (written) in this sheet of paper?' 'Ali replied, it deals with The Diyya (compensation (blood money) paid by the killer to the relatives of the victim), the ransom for the releasing of the captives from the hands of the enemies, and the law that no Muslim should be killed in Qisas (equality in punishment) for the killing of (a disbeliever).

QUICK LESSONS:
Abide by Islamic laws such as diyyah, ransom and qisas

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains three important laws that Muslims must abide by. The first law is the law of diyyah which is a compensation paid by the killer to the relatives of the victim. The second law is related to ransom for releasing captives from enemies. The third law states that no Muslim should be killed in qisas which means equality in punishment for killing a disbeliever. These laws are important as they ensure justice and fairness among all people regardless of their faith or beliefs.
