Observe prescribed mourning periods with patience & forbearance; Show respect towards those who have lost their loved ones; Do not try to console them in an inappropriate manner; Obey Islamic teachings on matters related to death & bereavement .

This hadith is about the mourning period of a widow. Umm Salama and Umm Habiba were talking to each other when a woman came to Prophet Muhammad and mentioned that her daughter had lost her husband. She wanted to use collyrium but Prophet Muhammad said that one among them used to throw dung at the end of a year and now the mourning period was only for four months and ten days. This hadith teaches us that we should observe the mourning period as prescribed by Islam with patience and forbearance. We should not try to shorten it or make any changes in it as this would be disrespectful towards our religion. It also teaches us that we should show respect towards those who have lost their loved ones by not trying to make them feel better too soon or trying to console them in an inappropriate manner.
