Mourning Period for Widows

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the mourning period of a widow and how it should be observed.

Zainab bint Abu Salama reported: Umm Salama and Umm Habiba (Allah be pleased with them) were talking with each other (and saying) that a woman came to Allah's Messenger and mentioned to him that her daughter had lost her husband, and her eyes were sore and she wanted to use collyrium, whereupon Allah's Messenger said: One among you used to throw dung at the end of a year, and now (this abstinence from adornment) is only for four months and ten days.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the mourning period of a widow. Umm Salama and Umm Habiba were talking to each other when a woman came to Prophet Muhammad and mentioned that her daughter had lost her husband. She wanted to use collyrium but Prophet Muhammad said that one among them used to throw dung at the end of a year and now the mourning period was only for four months and ten days. This hadith teaches us that we should observe the mourning period as prescribed by Islam with patience and forbearance. We should not try to shorten it or make any changes in it as this would be disrespectful towards our religion. It also teaches us that we should show respect towards those who have lost their loved ones by not trying to make them feel better too soon or trying to console them in an inappropriate manner.
