Sahih Muslim 1438g (Book 16, Hadith 152) #10687
Permissibility of 'Azl

SUMMARY: This hadith discusses the practice of 'azl, which is a form of contraception. The Prophet (PBUH) said that it is permissible to do so, as long as it does not interfere with what has been pre-ordained.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reported that mention was made of 'azl in the presence of Allah's Apostle whereupon he said: Why do you practise it? They said: There is a man whose wife has to suckle the child, and if that person has a sexual intercourse with her (she may conceive) which he does not like, and there is another person who has a slave-girl and he has a sexual intercourse with her, but he does not like her to have conception so that she may not become Umm Walad, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: There is no harm if you do not do that, for that (the birth of the child) is something pre- ordained. Ibn 'Aun said: I made a mention of this hadith to Hasan, and he said: By Allah, as if there is upbraiding in it (for 'azl).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the practice of 'azl, which is a form of contraception. It was mentioned in the presence of Allah's Apostle and he asked why they were practicing it. They explained that there are some people who don't want their wives to become pregnant or their slave girls to become Umm Walad, so they use this method as a form of contraception. The Prophet then said that there is no harm in doing this if it does not interfere with what has been pre-ordained by Allah. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful and respectful when discussing matters related to family planning and contraception, and we should always remember that ultimately everything happens according to Allah's will and plan for us. We should also be aware that while using methods such as 'azl may be permissible in certain circumstances, we must always take into consideration any potential consequences before making decisions about our own lives or those around us.
