Sahih Muslim 1416a (Book 16, Hadith 71) #10606
Prohibiting Marriage Exchange

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger prohibited Shighar, which is a type of marriage exchange.

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah's Messenger prohibited Shighar. Ibn Numair added: Shighar means that a person should say to the other person: Give me the hand of your daughter in marriage and I will (in return) marry my daughter to you; or merry me your sister, and I will marry my sister to you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for fairness and justice in all dealings with others.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of a type of marriage exchange called Shighar. In this practice, two people would agree to marry their children or siblings to each other without any dowry or payment. This was forbidden by Allah’s messenger as it was seen as an unfair practice that could lead to exploitation and inequality between the two families involved in the exchange. The hadith teaches us that we should not enter into any kind of agreement that could be seen as unjust or exploitative towards others, even if it involves our own family members. We should always strive for fairness and justice in all our dealings with others, no matter who they are.
