Sahih al-Bukhari 1100 (Book 18, Hadith 20) #1060
Praying in an Unconventional Direction

SUMMARY: Anas bin Malik was seen praying while riding a donkey, facing a direction other than the Qibla. When asked about it, he said that he would not have done it if he had not seen the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) doing it.

Narrated Anas bin Seereen: We went to receive Anas bin Malik when he returned from Sham and met him at a place called Ain-at-Tamr . I saw him praying riding the donkey, with his face to this direction, ie to the left of the Qibla. I said to him, "I have seen you offering the prayer in a direction other than that of the Qibla". He replied, "If I had not seen Allah's Messenger doing it, I would not have done it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ even if something seems unconventional or strange ; trust in Allah’s wisdom ; obey His commands ; be humble before Him during prayer .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how one should pray when riding on an animal or vehicle. It is narrated by Anas bin Seereen and Anas bin Malik that they went to receive Anas when he returned from Sham and met him at a place called Ain-at-Tamr. They saw him praying while riding his donkey, with his face turned to the left of the Qibla instead of facing towards it directly. When asked why he was doing this, he replied that if he hadn't seen Allah's Messenger do this himself, then he wouldn't have done so either. This hadith teaches us that we should follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ even if something seems unconventional or strange to us at first glance; for surely Allah knows best what is right for us and what will bring us closer to Him in our worship.
