The Practice of Temporary Marriage in Early Islam

SUMMARY: Temporary marriage was practiced during the time of Prophet Muhammad, Abu Bakr and Umar.

Ibn Uraij reported: 'Ati' reported that jibir b. Abdullah came to perform 'Umra, and we came to his abode, and the people asked him about different things, and then they made a mention of temporary marriage, whereupon he said: Yes, we had been benefiting ourselves by this temporary marriage during the lifetime of the Prophet and during the time of Abu Bakr and 'Umar.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect Islamic teachings

EXPLANATIONS:
During the time of Prophet Muhammad, Abu Bakr and Umar, temporary marriage was a practice that was accepted by the people. This type of marriage is known as Nikah al-Mut’ah which is a contract between two parties for a limited period of time with an agreed upon dowry. It is important to note that this type of marriage has been prohibited since then and should not be practiced today. This hadith serves as an example to show how practices can change over time in accordance with Islamic teachings.
