Sahih Muslim 1383 (Book 15, Hadith 559) #10494
Purifying Power of Medina

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a desert Arab who swore allegiance to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and then wanted to cancel it, but the Prophet refused. He eventually cancelled his allegiance himself, and the Prophet said that Medina is like a furnace which purifies what is good.

Jabir b. 'Abdullah (Allah be pleased with them) reported that a desert Arab swore allegiance to Allah's Messenger . He suffered from a severe fever in Medina (and) so he came to Allah's Messenger saying: Muhammad, cancel my oath of allegiance. But Allah's Messenger refused it. He again came and said: Cancel my oath of allegiance. But he (the Holy Prophet) refused it. He again came to him and said: Cancel my oath of allegiance, but he refused. The desert Arab, however, went away (cancelling the allegiance himself). Thereupon Allah's Messenger said: Medina is like a furnace which drives away its impurity and purifies what is good.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the power of Medina in purifying people's hearts and souls. It tells us that when a desert Arab swore an oath of allegiance to Allah's Messenger, he later wanted to cancel it due to suffering from fever in Medina. However, the Prophet refused his request as he believed that being in Medina would help him purify himself from any impurities or wrongdoings he may have committed before coming there. Eventually, this man cancelled his own oath and left without permission from the Prophet; however, even then the Prophet still praised how powerful being in Medina was for purifying one's heart and soul. This hadith teaches us that we should strive to be better people by living our lives according to Islamic teachings so we can become purified individuals with strong faith in Allah SWT.
