Sahih Muslim 1240d (Book 15, Hadith 220) #10155
Changing Ihram from Hajj to 'Umra

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions changed their Ihram from Hajj to 'Umra after four days of the ten-day Dhu'l-Hijja period.

Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with them) reported: Allah's Messenger came along with his Companions when four days had passed out of ten days (of Dhu'l-Hijja) and they were pronouncing Talbiya for Hajj, and he (the Holy Prophet) commanded them to change (this Ihram) into that of 'Umra.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive your best in fulfilling religious obligations even if you are unable complete it due external factors like time or money constraints .

EXPLANATIONS:
During the ten day period of Dhu’l Hijjah, Muslims perform a pilgrimage known as Hajj. This is a journey to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, where they perform certain rituals in honor of Allah. On this particular occasion, the Prophet Muhammad and his companions had been performing these rituals for four days when he commanded them to change their state of Ihram from one for Hajj into one for ‘Umra. This change was necessary because they were unable to complete all the rituals due to time constraints. The hadith teaches us that we should always strive our best in fulfilling our religious obligations even if we are unable to complete them due to external factors such as time or money constraints. We should also remember that Allah is merciful and understanding and will forgive us if we are not able to fulfill our obligations completely.
