Sunan Ibn Majah 1023 (Book 5, Hadith 221) #30375
Maintaining Cleanliness and Attentiveness During Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of maintaining cleanliness and attentiveness during prayer, as the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forbade spitting in front of oneself while praying and warned against any action that would invalidate one's ablution or disrupt their submissiveness.

It was narrated from Hudhaifah that he saw Shabath bin Rib’i spitting in front of him. He said: "O Shabath! Do not spit in front of you, for the Messenger of Allah used to forbid that, and he said: 'When a man stands up to perform prayer, Allah turns His Face towards him until he turns away or he commits an evil Hadath.’"* * In Injah Al-Hajah, 'Abdul-Ghani Dehlawi said: "Meaning he does a matter that negates the Khushu'(submissiveness) and attentiveness of his prayer. Or, the meaning of Hadath is invalidating the ablution. The only reason that he described it as 'evil' is because in most cases, its occurrence during prayer is from Shaitan".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respectfully perform salat with concentration and awareness; maintain purity by not spitting in front of oneself; be aware of Shaitan’s influence when praying

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of maintaining cleanliness and attentiveness during prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forbade spitting in front of oneself while praying, as it is considered unclean. He also warned against any action that would invalidate one's ablution or disrupt their submissiveness, such as talking or moving around too much. These actions can distract from the focus on Allah that should be present during prayer, so it is important to remain still and attentive throughout. Additionally, this hadith warns us to be aware of Shaitan’s influence when we are praying; he may try to tempt us into doing something that will break our concentration or make us forgetful of our ablution. It is important for Muslims to remember these teachings when they are performing salat so they can get the most out of their prayers.
