Sunan Ibn Majah 1022 (Book 5, Hadith 220) #30374
Respect for the Qiblah

SUMMARY: Spitting in the direction of the Qiblah is disrespectful and should be avoided.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah saw some sputum in the direction of the Qiblah of the mosque. He turned to the people and said: "What is wrong with one of you that he stands facing Him (meaning his Lord) and spits in front of Him? Would anyone like to be faced by someone who spits in his face? If anyone of you needs to spit, then let him spit to his left, or let him do like this in his garment". Then Ismail (Abu Bakr bin Abu Shuaibah) showed me how he spat in his garment then rubbed it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show respect for the qibla by spitting away from it or into one's garment instead.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us to show respect for the direction of the qiblah, which is a symbol of Allah's presence. The Prophet Muhammad saw some sputum in this direction and was displeased with it, as it showed disrespect towards Allah. He then instructed people to spit to their left or into their garments instead, so that they would not be facing Allah when they spat. This hadith also teaches us that we should always strive to maintain cleanliness and respect in our mosques, as these are places where we come closer to Allah through prayer and worship.
