Antiwar movement plans massive protest in Los Angeles

Thousands of antiwar activists will march through downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, January 11, 2003 to say "Stop the War in Iraq."  The demonstration is expected to be the largest California protest against the Bush Administration's plans for a pre-emptive war on Iraq.

Demonstrators will gather in downtown Los Angeles at Broadway and Olympic at 11:30 a.m. for a brief rally, followed by a march up Broadway to a massive antiwar rally at the Federal Building at Temple and Los Angeles Streets.

Featured speakers will include Martin Sheen, star of NBC's Emmy Award winning "West Wing schedule to speak at 3:00 p.m.;" Kon Kovic, a disabled Vietnam veteran whose own experience in Vietnam was chronicled in the award winning feature film, "Born on the 4th of July;" Maria Elena Durazo, President of Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE), Local 11; Alejandro Stevens, President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 660; Jeff Paterson, the first active duty marine to refuse to fight in the 1991 Gulf War; and Jerry Quickley, performance artist.  Jackson Browne and Burning Star will perform.

Saturday's protest is sponsored by a broad coalition of activist organizations representing tens of thousands of Californians including ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), Coalition for World Peace (CFWP), Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace (ICUJP), Not in Our Name (NION) and the Pacifica radio station, KPFK.

I'm wondering if we'll see this on the media. I hear about protests in my area, Chicago, and nationwide via email and phone calls. I've attended a few myself, but have yet to see any news of these on television or print. Freinds in Austrailia and Britian have told me about some major protests in their countries - again, I see nothing on the American news. Has ayone else noticed this?

it touches my heart knowing people like you braving yourselves to stop this madness that is about to happen to humanity.since childhood I always admire America and its society, and wanted
to visit the country.I had the opportunity of furthering my study in the States and was looking
forward to going there, but due financial constraint the plan was aborted.I admired most of your past presidents even there were shortcomings, but never before we heard other world leaders calling your present president a moron and behaving like Hitler. Its a shame on you and the humanity as a whole to have a leader
of the superpower nation to be branded like this.He lustful crave for world supremeacy is beyond anybody"s imagination. He just want to prove to his dad " hey dad I"m gonna do better than you or anybody esle ever did "
I salute to you people who are human by participating in this protest and I thank you and
and let us all pray for world peace.

Salaam-

WOW, what excellent news.

Would be wonderful if this sort of gathering against the government would be allowed in "muslim" countries.

Unfortunately, if something like this was to take place...most everyone would probably be beheaded!
