Dear Br. M. As-Salaamu Alaykum. Regarding your question, it is not allowed to decorate
Masjids, because their real goal to be an area of worship. Decorating mosques is one
of the signs of the HOUR, because it stips them from their real purpose besides the fact
that it disturbs the devoutness of those who go there to perform their prayers, for which
the mosque was built. The prohibition is even more legitimate when the decoration becomes
similar to the way Christians decorate their churches, because in Islam, whoever
imitates a Qaoum (or people), he will be joined and unite them o the Day of Judgement.
Therefore, Mosques should be built with the idea of Taqwa (or God feaing and God
consciousness) in mind. Still, there is no problem having the Mosques built strongly
and architecturally beautiful (but not fancy) because they are an exhibition of Allah's
symbols on earth which should bring taqwa to the hearts. And Allah Knows Best.
