Question 108121: I live and work in UK. In order to get extra welfare benefits to help pay my rent and local council taxes (on top of national taxes) I am showing less income (earnings). By doing so I get extra money which helps pay various bills and I save some as well. Is this permissible? Is this income Haram? Is the whole amount of benefit I get Haram or parts?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. In principle there is no harm in accepting this benefit and making use of it.The preponderant opinion is that it is permissible to accept gifts from the Mushrikin (the non-believers).Bukhari reported that Anas (Radiya Allahu Anhu) said: 'A Jewish girl brought a poisoned lamb to the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) and he ate from it'.However, cheating and making use of deceptive methods to gain this benefit, by providing the department of this benefit with something other than full qualifying information includes two forbidden matters:- The first is telling a lie.- The second is benefiting and making use of peoples money without any right. Therefore you should repent, and be keen in telling the truth as this leads to Paradise, and you should respect the agreement according to which you entered this country. This will give a good reputation to Islam and to Muslims. It is incumbent upon you to reimburse the remainder of that money to the appropriate department, by any possible means as long as you do not cause harm to yourself. You have to know that what you are entitled to of this money is Halal in principle, and whatever is beyond that is Haram to you. Question 106996: I am a Muslim man from North Ossetia in the Russian Federation. I live in this country with my divorced mother, and I am her only child. There are no Muslim scholars in this land. Is it permissible for me to travel in order to seek knowledge and leave my mother? She does not object to this. It is worth mentioning that my mothers parents are alive and her brother lives with his family in the same town.
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah The Almighty to grant us, as well as you, firmness on His religion. May Allaah The Almighty reward you for being dutiful to your mother and for your keenness to gain knowledge of the Sharee'ah (Islamic law). As long as you do not fear for your mother while you are travelling, because there are people who would take care of her as well as your father and they do not object to your traveling to seek knowledge, then it is obligatory upon you to travel to learn sciences of the religion as soon as you can. It has become incumbent upon you to seek knowledge because there are no scholars in your land as you said. Moreover, some scholars say that in the matter of seeking knowledge despite being a collective obligation, if it cannot be sought in the same country parents should not be obeyed if they tell their son not to travel for knowledge, as long as there is no fear for them. Gambled and won money
Question 116836: I gambled with 9000 then I won 12000. Now I feel this is haram. What should I do?
Question 116836: I gambled with 9000 then I won 12000. Now I feel this is haram. What should I do?
Answer: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.Making a bet between two people or more with a sum of money from each side so that one will lose his money and the other will win is Haram as stated by Ibn Rushd since it constitutes a form of gambling. This is the opinion of all Muslim scholars. Therefore, it is the inquirer's duties to repent to Allah and to get rid of the money he received from bets, i.e. three thousand dollars. In other words, he has to spend such amount on behalf of the Muslim commons, not as Sadaqa. Here, we remind you of the following Prophetic Hadith: "A servant of Allah will remain standing on the Day of Judgement till he is questioned about his youth, how he spent it, and about his knowledge and how he utilized it, and about his wealth from where he acquired it and in what activities he spent it; and about his body and how he consumed it" [ al-Tirmizi, al-Albani regarded it as sound Hadith]Allah knows best. Answer: As-Salamu `alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
We commend your keenness on getting your self well-acquainted with Islam and its teachings, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake.
All kinds of gambling (al-maysir or al-qimar) are Haram in Islam. Allah says, "They ask you concerning wine and gambling. Say (O Prophet), 'In them is great sin and some benefit for human beings, but the sin is greater than the benefit" (al-Baqarah: 219)
Allah(swt) says:
"God accepts the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and repent soon afterwards; to them will God turn in mercy: For God is full of knowledge and wisdom.Of no effect is the repentance of those who continue to do evil, until death faces one of them, and he says, "Now have I repented indeed;" nor of those who die rejecting Faith: for them have We prepared a punishment most grievous."(Holy Quran 4:17 and 18)
Also,
"And establish regular prayers at the two ends of the day and at the approaches of the night: For those things, that are good remove those that are evil: Be that the word of remembrance to those who remember (their Lord)"(Quran 11-Hd:114)
So tell your father to ask forgiveness of Allah and make a determination never to do so in the future. Allah is indeed Forgiving and Merciful."
Allah (swt) says:
"O you who believe! Seek help with Sabr and Salah."(Al-Baqarah)
Hence for any necessity we should pray two raka`ah and ask Allah Almighty to help in that particular task.
Ahmad has on sound authority reported from Abu Darda that the Prophet Sallallahu Alehi wasallam said: "He who makes wudu, and does it properly, then prays two rak'at, Allah will grant him whatever he may pray for, sooner or later.
Following Duaas you can recite to get suitable partner for marriage:
1. Rabbana aatina fid-duniya hasanatan wa fil aakhirati hasanatan, waqina azaabannnar.
("Our Lord! Give unto us in the world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and guard us from the doom of Fire.")(Quran 2:201)
2. Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa zurriyyatina qurrata `ayunin, waj-alna lil muttaqeena imama.("Our Lord! Vouchsafe us comfort of our wives and of our offspring, and make us patterns for (all) those who ward off (evil).")(Quran 25:74)

Gambling
Question 2120: is playing a slot machine at a casino to win money haram?
Question 2120: is playing a slot machine at a casino to win money haram?
Answer: Dear M. As Salaam Alykum, Playing the slot machine is Haram. Allah says in the Quran, 2:219 " They ask you (O Muhammad SAW) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: "In them is a great sin, and (some) benefit for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit."....(end) Islam promotes all that is pure and strives to eradicate all impurities. If something is entirely harmful it is haram, and if it is entirely beneficial it is halal. Gambling, the game of chance does not promote a healthy attidue towards life. Instead of investing their energies into hard work and productivity people start to depend on or day dream about winning in the lottery or in gambling. This behaviour is counter productive to the health of society. Thank you for asking. MAA (Source: IslamiCity)

Question 116516: Would you please tell me about gambling and a friend of me is addicted with it I told him to stop but, he couldn't. He works and he loses the very first day all his money. Above all he have psychological problem with it, I think. Can you help please?
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions. Gambling is one of the great major sins and Allaah has described it as the work of the devil and equated it with consuming intoxicants. Allaah says (which means): {O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, Al Ansaab, and Al Azlaam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Satan's handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allaah and from prayer. So will you not then desist?}[Quran 5:90-91]. Hence, gambling is a reason of spreading enmity and hatred, and hindering people from the mention of Allaah and the performance of prayer. The Prophet (saw) said: "Allaah has forbidden my nation from all kinds of intoxicants and gambling." [Ahmad] Thus, gambling is forbidden because it causes negligence and affects the heart in the same way intoxicants affect the mind. Therefore, it is an obligation on whoever is afflicted by it to repent to Allaah and to remember that he will stand in front of Him naked and bare-footed in a day that is 50,000 years long. Finally, we advise the questioner to continuously advise his friend who is addicted to gambling and remind him of Allaah and His punishment. It might be that he will deter, however, if he does not take heed after being advised, then Allaah says (which means): {And if they turn away-then know that Allaah only intends to afflict them with some of their [own sins]. And indeed, many among the people are defiantly disobedient.}[Quran 5:49]. We ask Allaah to guide us all and rectify our affairs. Allaah knows best. (Source: islam_web)

Gambling or buying lottery tickets to repay debts is impermissible

Question 114846: Assalaamu alaykum!I hear that if someone life is in danger and they find nothing halal to save their life, they are allowed to eat a little haram to save their life. I am in much difficulty; I am indebted, am 50 years of age, and do not know how much longer I will live. I do not want to die without paying my debt. I try to offer my prayers regularly, including night prayers, and I ask Allaah every day to give me some way to repay my loan so that I would feel ok when I am about to depart. I also do not have a job. I left my country and am residing in another country to save my life and find a job to pay back my loan. Is it allowed for me, in this case, to buy a lottery ticket and pray to Allaah to grant me the prize from the lottery so that I can pay the loan back?
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger.First of all, we ask Allaah to facilitate your matters and to give you a way out of all your difficulties. If you supplicate Allaah with the supplication that was reported from the Prophet (saw) in this regard, then this is good. Please refer to fatwa 142905. As regards what you asked about, which is buying a lottery ticket, then the answer is that it is not permissible for you to buy a lottery ticket or gamble in order to repay your debt. It is enough that you be determined to repay it whenever you become able to do so and Allaah will help you repay it. If you die before repaying your debt, then we hope that Allaah will repay it on your behalf and please your creditors. The evidence about this is the hadeeth in which the Prophet (saw) said, "Whoever takes people's money while intending to repay it, Allaah will help him repay it, and whoever takes people's money while intending to spoil it (not repay), then Allaah will spoil him (i.e. spoil his wealth and punish him in the hereafter)." [Al-Bukhari] Ibn Hajar said, "If a person dies before fulfilling his debt without any negligence on his part, such as if he is in financial difficulties, for example, or that he suddenly dies while he has hidden money and had the intention to repay his debt but was unable to do so in this worldly life, then it appears, in this case, that he is free from any liability in the Hereafter and that his good deeds will not be taken from him and given to the creditor; rather, Allaah will repay the creditor on his behalf."For more benefit on the necessity that makes it permissible to commit what is forbidden, please refer to fatwa 263158.Allaah knows best. Question 4462: It is a well known tradition throughout the Muslim world that when a person dies, arrangements for his funeral and burial start without delay. If the death occurs in the morning, the deceased is often taken to the mosque for prayer at the time of Dhuhr or Asr. If he dies in the evening, he is sure to be buried before midday the following day. And this is considered a gesture of doing what is right for the deceased person. There is a Hadith to support this attitude. Al-Bukhari relates on the authority of Abu Hurairah who quotes the Prophet as saying: "Speed up the funeral; if it is one of a good person, you are only taking that person to a good prospect. If otherwise, then he is no more than an evil you are putting off your shoulders." Some scholars understand this Hadith as an instructions to walk fast when taking the body to be buried, while others take it to mean speeding up the preparations for prayer and burial. This latter view is supported by other Hadiths. The first one is related by At-Tabarani on the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar who says: "I heard Allah's messenger (peace be upon him) say: When anyone of you dies, do not keep his body. Be speedy when taking him to his grave." Another Hadith related by Abu-Dawood quotes the Prophet as saying: "It is not right that the corpse of a Muslim is kept at home with his family."
Answer: There is no doubt that all forms of gambling are forbidden. However, the first practice, as I understand it, may be no more than a promotional activity by shopkeepers and department stores. If you go to a shop to buy an article, say for 80 riyals and the shopkeeper tells you if you increase your purchase to 100 riyals or more, you will be entitled to draw an envelope which gives you a small gift which he does not specify, you have a choice to make. When you increase your purchase, you are not actually paying money in order to draw an envelope, or a raffle, but you are buying an additional article at its normal price. It is true that the shopkeeper does this in order to persuade you to increase your purchase, but ultimately the choice is yours. You are getting your article at their real value. You are not buying the right to draw an envelope, but you are only being persuaded to buy something which you may not have bought at that particular time. You will not buy something which is of no use to you. I feel that this is simply a promotional exercise which gives you a little extra over what you have bought. Whatever envelope you draw will give you a little gift. It is true that some gifts will be more valuable than others, but then it is merely a gift and you cannot choose your gifts at any time. As for the other practice, I am afraid it is a form of gambling. People buy these raffles and only one of them gets the article. The others lose their money. It is true that the seller receives only the fair price of the article, but what about those who lost their money. They are buying thin air. This is gambling or, at least a forbidden practice. Gambling: Sweepstakes

Question 5367: Is participating in sweepstakes the same as gambling? It is a contest but then again it can also be categorised as easy earning
Answer: As-Salamu `alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear questioner, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake.
Answering the question in point, Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, former President of the Islamic Society of North America, states:
"There are different types of sweepstakes. Not all of them come in the category of lottery or gambling. If a sweepstakes is merely promotional where no purchase is necessary, then it is like a prize or award that the business volunteers to advertise its products and to attract more customers. Such sweepstakes are permissible in Islam. But if a sweepstake requires to purchase a ticket or something similar, and get nothing in return for the value except for those who win, then it would be Haram, because that would be gambling.
All kinds of gambling (al-maysir or al-qimar) are Haram in Islam. Allah says, "They ask you concerning wine and gambling. Say (O Prophet), 'In them is great sin and some benefit for human beings, but the sin is greater than the benefit" (al-Baqarah: 219) Lotteries are, perhaps, the most widespread form of gambling. In most lotteries, the gamblers buy numbered tickets. In many State lotteries in America the chances of winning are one to fourteen million times. Some people have rightly called lottery the most senseless and speculative "investment" on earth. It is deceitful. It lives and thrives by consuming the hard-earned resources of losers. It depends on the losses of many. It robs so many to pay so few. It exploits the weak and seeks to weaken the strong."
Wassalam and Allah Almighty knows best.

Question 124257: Assalaamu alaykum. I just have a quick question. My question is about games which contain 'magical powers. You have stated in a bunch of your fatwas that games that have characters with superpowers or unnatural abilities are permissible and do not come under the heading of Sihr (magic). So what about the games which contain superpowers just like those other games but instead call it 'magic? Keep in mind that magic or Sihr, in Islam, is that in which one communicates with or uses the power of the jinn or the devils. The people of the Book also hold a similar view. What is meant by magical in these games is superpowers or unnatural. According to dictionaries on the internet, it can mean the following: "having or apparently having supernatural powers," "exceptional skill or talent," "special power, influence, or skill," "of, relating to, or invoking the supernatural," "Possessing distinctive qualities that produce unaccountable or baffling effects," "any extraordinary influence or power," and so on. So it does not mean the type of haram magic. It is not even considered magic in the first place since it is very different. It does not involve the devils or the jinn. If it is still haram, then that would mean that any type of superpower in children's games or cartoons is impermissible. In some rare cases, the magic portrayed in video games might resemble the real world haram magic, and I do believe that that is haram. However, like I said before, it is rare and is only found in 18+ games. You might say that kids might mistake this type of magic for real life magic, but that does not make it haram. The parents can easily explain it to them, if they mistake it in the first place. So my question is: Are these types of games permissible? And what if we change the word magic in the games to superpowers? Would that make it permissible? I need a logical answer. Thank you very much.
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger. Regarding these animated cartoon characters with supernatural powers and the like, we believe that what is allowed thereof is what does not include the claim of possessing any divine attributes that are exclusive to Allah, The Exalted, such as the ability to raise the dead or know the Unseen, and what does not involve resembling The Creator to His creation and similar violations of the sound Islamic creed. Among the religious violations that are prohibited to make and watch in movies and games is any form of black magic and sorcery, such that the game includes approval of magic and high regard for it and for magicians by imitating their actions and practices and the like. Such games are religiously prohibited, even though it is not actual magic. It is in this respect that some scholars forbade fictional magic because it involves imitation of real magic. Dr. Saalih Al-Fawzaan said, "It is not permissible to watch magic, whether it is real or fictional acting. It is not permissible because it is falsehood and it is not permissible to watch falsehood because by watching it, one approves of it." This statement is sufficient, Allah willing, to enable you to distinguish between what is allowed and what is forbidden of such games. Please accept our apology for not providing a detailed answer for all the points in your long question. For more benefit, please refer to fatwa 88539.Allah knows best. (Source: islam_web)

Question 124117: Asalamu alaykumNowadays there are videogames that have illuminati Symbols in them. Such as a pyramid with an eye on the top or pentagrams and othersIf a game has such symbols but these Symbols dont affect the game itself, is playing these games still haram? For Example you have a viddeogame and youre an Agent in a City that has been afflicted with a desease and you have to do everything to save the town. Now Somewhere in the town(for example on walls or streets or flags) are These Symbols, a pyramid with an eye, pentagrams and other satanic Symbols but they dont affect the game. You dont pray to them or do something with themthey are just there and you see them when you walk by or other Players in the game wear them on their suits or something like that. You basically dont really interact with these Symbols as i said are just therethe game isnt about these symbolsAreThese games haram and if yes what should i do if i own such games
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger. One should avoid playing with the games that show the slogans of other religions and anti-Islamic organizations. However, if the game does not include glorification or submission to those slogans, and they only appear at random, then we have already issued some Fataawa that it is not forbidden to play with such games, based on the statement of some scholars that it is not forbidden to look at the cross which is the greatest symbol and slogan of disbelief. The symbols of things that not worshipped such as what you mentioned in the question are less serious and less harmful than the symbols that are worshipped like the cross. Finally, you should know that a Muslim should utilize his time with what is beneficial to him in his religion and his worldly matters, and he should avoid being addicted to games, that would waste his time. A person is responsible for his time, as in the Hadeeth that reads: "The feet of a servant will not move on the Day of Judgment until he is questioned how he spent his life." Gargling and washing the inside of the ear during Ghusl

Question 109482: AsalamoAlikum My Question is with regard to ghuslDuring ghusl do we have to just rinse the mouth or do we have to gargle as well(taking water down to the throat)? is it true that without gargling ghusl is not complete? if gargling is essential than can we do it while rinsing the mouth during beginning wudu(the sunnat way) since normally we do not gargle in wudu and i am afraid whether doing so would be counted as bidat. In the sequence of sunnat way of ghusl usually posted on websites I do not find gargling so basically I am confused whether I have to do it or not and when to position it.Do we have to make sure that water reaches inside the ears for ghusl to be accptable and if yes than to what extent?Jazak Allah
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger. Rinsing the mouth is something legislated, be it obligatory or desirable, according to two different views of the jurists . As regards gargling (making water reach the throat), and the like, then no scholar has ever said that it is legislated, and this act may be considered as exaggerating in religion. What is required in Ghusl (ritual bath) is to make water reach all the external parts of the body, and not reach inside the body. Hence, it is obligatory (in the ritual bath) to make the water reach all the external parts of ones body, including the inside and outside of the ears.Concerning the ear canal, then the scholars differed in opinion about the obligation of washing it. The Maaliki School of jurisprudence is of the view that it is a Sunnah to rub it when performing Ghusl. However, the Hanafi School of jurisprudence is of the view that it is an obligation to wash everything that could be washed without difficulty, like the ear (ear canal) and the belly button. Whereas the Shaafii School of jurisprudence is of the opinion that it is an obligation to wash what appears from the ear canal and not the inside of it, as stated by An-Nawawi .For more benefit on how to perform Ghusl according to the Sunnah, please refer to Fatwa 82245. Question 108902: I used to gargle during Ghusl (ritual shower), thinking that it had to be done, although only rinsing the mouth is required; is my ghusl valid? I am very worried. I also used to gargle during ablution.
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger. Washing the inside of the mouth when performing Ghusl is an issue of difference of opinion among the scholars. The Kuwaiti Fiqh Encyclopedia reads: "The scholars of Fiqh agreed that making the water reach the entire body is obligatory in Ghusl because it is one of the pillars of Ghusl that one makes the water reach the entire body, but they differed in opinion in regard to the inside of the mouth and nose; the Hanafi and Hanbali Schools said, 'It is part of the body; so rinsing the mouth and sniffing water into the nostrils is obligatory in Ghusl according to them. However, the Maaliki and Shaafi'i Schools said, 'It is obligatory to wash the outside of the body only, so it is not obligatory to rinse the mouth or sniff water in Ghusl."The scholars of Fiqh define gargling as exaggerating in rinsing the mouth; the Kuwaiti Fiqh Encyclopedia also reads, "Exaggerating in rinsing the mouth, which is done by gargling, is among the recommended acts in ablution according to the Maaliki and Hanbali Schools; and this is also the stronger view in the Hanafi School. According to the Shaafi'i School and the other view of the Hanafi School, exaggerating in rinsing the mouth is a Sunnah act of ablution."Based on the above, your Ghusl is valid in all cases, and now you know the ruling of gargling when performing ablution. Question 2053: There is a person in our mosque who
farts when bowing down completely
during namaz [ie. head down to the ground] every time we have to get in this position he farts. And it smells bad,
how can I tell him to stop. Sometimes
the smell is so bad some sisters have
told me that they can smell it in the
ladies section of the mosque.
what should I say to him? What should
be done without hurting his fealings.
please do not laugh at this is happening
at my mosque, and I can not approch
the Imam about this since it is his
he may be offended since it is his
cousin.
please help!!
Answer: 2053 Dear Br. R. As-salaamu alaykum. First of all, this person should be
educated and made aware that when a person farts, he/she loses the
ablution and therefore, has to re-wash otherwise, the prayer is no
longer valid. Therefore, not only is it a question of farting and
disturbing the others, but also, it is his right as a Muslim and your
duty (or someone elses duty) to do so since Muslims are brothers. Now,
what is left is how to approach him. You can write an extremely polite
letter stating the two issues of his prayer not being valid and that of
disturbing the others. You should also tell him that if he has
gastro-intestinal problems and would like to pray in congregation, then,
he should stand on the last row so that as soon as he feels like passing
gas, he can leave the prayer area, relieve himself, then make ablution,
then re-join the prayer. This is actually a sign that the person knows
the rules of the prayers and there is nothing to be embarrassed about.
If the letter is done in a polite manner and makes it clear that it is
done for the sake of Allah and not for embarrassment, then inshaAllah,
the brother should follow the advice. I think this is the best way
before turning to someone else because it will keep the matter
confidential. If this doesnt work, then you may approach the Imam
either personally or through a letter too. But a good Imam should
actually welcome such a comment because it is for the persons and the
publics benefit. Good luck. Thank you for asking and God knows best.

Gates of Paradise
Question 103683: What are the names of the doors of Paradise?
Question 103683: What are the names of the doors of Paradise?
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger.
Paradise has eight doors as mentioned in many Islamic texts.
Ubaadah narrated that the Prophet (saw) said: "If anyone testifies that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone Who has no partners, and that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger, and that Jesus is Allah's slave and His Messenger and His word which He bestowed on Mary and a spirit created by Him, and that Paradise is true, and Hell is true, Allah will admit him into Paradise through any of its eight gates he wishes." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
There are other gates that have their own names as confirmed in Islamic texts, such as the Gate of al-Salah (prayer), the Gate of al-Jihaad, the Gate of as-Sadaqah (charity), the Gate of ar-Rayyan, the Gate of al-Ayman and the Gate of Al-Kaathimeen Al-Ghayth (i.e. those who repress anger).
There are some other names pointed out by some scholars based on the indications mentioned in the texts such as gate of at-Tawbah, (repentance), ath-Thikr (remembrance of Allah), al-Ilm (the knowledge), ar-Radheen (persons who are content with the Decree of Allah), and al-Hajj.
The evidence for the first four names is the following Hadeeth that the Prophet (saw) said: "Whoever gives two kinds (of things or property) in charity for Allah's Cause, will be called from the gates of Paradise and will be addressed, 'O slaves of Allah! Here is prosperity'. So, whoever was amongst the people who used to offer their prayers, will be called from the gate of the prayer; and whoever was amongst the people who used to participate in Jihad, will be called from the gate of Jihad; and whoever was amongst those who used to observe fasts, will be called from the gate of Ar-Rayyan; whoever was amongst those who used to give in charity, will be called from the gate of charity." . [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
The evidence for the fifth name, i.e. al-Ayman, is the Hadeeth of intercession which includes " Allah Says to the Prophet (saw) "O Muhammad! Let those of your followers who have no accounts, enter through the Gate of al-Ayman, (a gate of the gates of Paradise that lies on the right); and they will share the other gates with the people."
The evidence for the sixth name Al-Kaathimeen Al-Ghayth, is a Mursal Hadeeth reported from al-Hasan that he said: "There is a Gate in Paradise that none will enter by except the one who forgives others' injustice." [Ahmad as quoted by Ibn Hajr in al-Fath]
Know that the scholars of Hadeeth are agreed upon the first four names only and they disagree regarding the other names. Imam an-Nawawi quoted from al-Qadi as saying: 'There are other Ahadeeth mentioning other names of Gates of Paradise, such as at-Tawbah, the Gate of those who repress anger and pardon others, and ar-Radheen. These are seven names. There is a Hadeeth on the subject of intercession proving a Gate is named al-Ayman, it may be the name of Gate number eight.
Ibn Hajar said: 'The sound Hadeeth mentioned four names of the Gates of Paradise; no doubt there will be a Gate with the name al-Hajj since it is one of the fundamentals of Islam, and there are other names mentioned in different Ahadeeth, and then he mentioned the above names.

Question 117797: I live in a non-Muslim country and try to help the Muslim youth (age 12-16) to save their faith in this society (which contains a lot of promiscuity, pre-marital relations, alcohol, and so on). Once a week, I gather some Muslim youth for a small lecture (usually about the biography of our beloved Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), and they are merely spending time under my supervision. Usually, they play some educational games; we even have a bow, and they are mastering the art of archery. Spending time together is extremely important for the youth given that the human being is a social creature, and we have to provide our youth with an Islamic company, otherwise they will seek an un-Islamic one. Unfortunately, only very few youngsters attend these gatherings, so boys and girls come together. Of course, I am trying my best in order to maintain the Islamic etiquette. So I have two possibilities:1. To continue my Da'wah (proselytization) in this direction and hope that one day we will have enough youngsters to have separate-sex meetings.2. To end this type of volunteer work. If you were to tell me to continue, then could you give me some fruitful advice? On what should I focus?
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger. Firstly, we would like to commend your efforts and keenness on carrying out righteous deeds and instilling virtue within the Muslim children. May Allah reward you generously. If the children have reached puberty, then it is impermissible for the boys to mix with the girls. As for young children who have not yet attained puberty, they should also be separated so that they would become accustomed to it, as we have previously underlined in fatwa 85641. But you should know that just being under the same roof is not considered prohibited intermixing. If there is some sort of separation between them, even in the same hall, then this would not be prohibited intermixing. The Kuwaiti Encyclopedia of Fiqh reads:"Intermixing between men and women is allowable for a need recognized by the Sharia provided that the relevant Sharia provisions are observed. This is why it is allowable for the Muslim woman to attend the congregational and the 'Eed prayers. Some scholars underlined that it is allowable for the Muslim woman to perform Hajj escorted by a trusted group of men. It is also permissible for the woman to engage in transactions such as buying, selling, renting, hiring, and the like with men. Imaam Maalik was asked, 'What is the ruling on an unmarried woman who seeks the help of a non-Mahram (marriageable) man to carry out some tasks for her and hand things over to her?' He answered, 'There is no religious impediment to it; and I prefer that he lets another accompany him. Were people to neglect her, she would be helpless!'" You should try in the future to separate them so that each gender would be alone, and some righteous female teachers should teach the young girls. Verily, this is better and safer. Allah knows best. Question 99981: I am writing to inquire about an activity that is done in our Masjid as whether it is a Bed'ah(innovation)or not.Every day just after each Fajr Salat the Imam asks someone to distribute Mushafs- Qurans. So, each one in the Masjid gets one and then they set in circles and one person in each circle recites three Ayats-and just three Ayats- then the next one recites the same three Ayats, and the next follows, and the next one and so on.. The reason I suspected it might be a Bed'aa (innovation) since it closely resembles what the Sufi sects do after Salat as they set in circle and do Zikr - Subhanallah, Alhamdullella, Allaho-akbar..etc. I heard lots of Ulama- Ahl Assunna wal Jama'aa- say that it is Bed'ah (innovation). And the Ulama explained that although the Zikr that they do itself is a Sunna after the Salat but how they do it and the way they do it is what transformed it into a Bed'ah (innovation).Furthermore, by doing that just after the Salat they are might be losing other Sunnas that are reported by the Prophet-peace be upon him- to be done after Fajr Salat. Finally, both the Sufi sects and our Masjid administration-which I know are not Sufis- may come up with lot of reasons and advantages as to why they do that, and the benefits that each one who participates may get. Please help us stay on the straight path and follow the right Sunna of the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
Answer: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. No doubt, the best deeds that are carried out to gain the pleasure of Allah are that confirm the Sunnah of the Prophet Mohammad (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam). So, the highly marvelous act after al-Fajr prayer is being engaged in invoking the supplication that are said in morning. However, the practice of this Imam is good and he will be rewarded for it though it is not the best act. It is not a Bid'ah if the intention is to teach them the correct way of the recitation of the Quran or to help them momorize a chapter after a chapter from the Quran.Allah knows best (Source: islam_web)

Question 94441: when some one dies...families go round to the deceased houses and sit with there families and make a collective dua..is this permissable?
and in the masjid they hold a 'khutam'...is this allowed?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah.
Among
the fatwas issued by the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas is the
following:
We
do not know of any evidence (daleel) from either the Quraan or Sunnah
to indicate that it is prescribed to recite any soorah of the Quraan
in any place, or in the house of the deceased. We do not know of anyone
among the Sahaabah or Taabieen or Taabiee al-Taabieen [i.e., the
first three generations of Islam] from whom it is reported that he did
that. The basic principle is that this is not allowed, because the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah
be upon him) said: Whoever does any action that is not in accordance
with this matter of ours [i.e., Islam], will have it rejected. (Narrated
by Muslim, al-Aqdiyah, 3243). With regard to gathering and making
duaa for him, duaa is an act of worship, and acts of worship are
based on the principle of tawqeef [i.e., to be based solely on the saheeh
texts, with no room for adding or taking away anything]. It is not reported
that the Prophet (peace and blessings
of Allaah be upon him) made duaa with his companions for any deceased
person after he had completed the (funeral) prayer. It was reported
that he used to stand by the grave after the ground had been levelled
over its occupant and say, Pray for forgiveness for your brother, for
he is being questioned now. From the above we know that the correct
thing is not to offer a collective duaa after offering the funeral
prayer, and that this is bidah.
Fataawa
al-Lajnah al-Daaimah, 9/16
So
pray for your deceased each one of you individually. It is OK to make
duaa for him during salaah and at other times, at the times when duaas
are answered, such as the last third of the night, the last hour of
Asr, Fridays, between the adhaan and iqaamah, etc. You should be sincere
in your duaa. When the duaa is only between you and Allaah, you
will feel more khushoo and will feel more sincere than when
you make duaa simply to please others, as when people recite duaa
collectively to please the family of the deceased. May Allaah help us
and you to do all that is good.

Gathering sixty poor persons for cooked food is valid in expiation
Question 112800: Is it permissible to give sixty persons uncooked rice as expiation? Can it, for example, be given out all at once to one poor family? What is the amount of food that everyone should take?
Question 112800: Is it permissible to give sixty persons uncooked rice as expiation? Can it, for example, be given out all at once to one poor family? What is the amount of food that everyone should take?
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that none is worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger. Feeding sixty poor persons as expiation is fulfilled by giving every poor person half a saa (approximately one and a half kilograms) of wheat, dates, rice or whatever of the common food of the country. This food should be uncooked; however, if one cooked food for sixty poor persons and gathered them together for it, then this will be valid and sufficient for fulfilling the obligation. It is not valid to give it all to only one poor family whose number is less than sixty members. That is because no poor person should receive more than half a saa. However, if one is obliged to observe several expiations, then it is permissible for him to give to a single poor person half a saa from every expiation.Allah Knows best. (Source: islam_web)

Question 93930: Some families get together on the last night of Shabaan and make food, and some of their lders recite poems for this occasion. What is the ruling on this getting together to eat?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah.
We put this question to Sahykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen, may Allaah preserve him, who replied as follows:
I think that this is closer to bidah (innovation), and it should be disallowed rather than permitted, because it is being taken as an Eid (regular celebration). If it happened only once, then it is OK.
Our response is: we do not allow it.

Gathering to read Qur??an for the dead
Question 99929: Gathering to read Quran for the dead or for celebration not for learning and teaching.
Question 99929: Gathering to read Quran for the dead or for celebration not for learning and teaching.
Answer:
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. May Allah guide you to his obedience and enable you to hold tight to the Sunnah. Know that there are many matters that were innovated in religion without proof. Among these innovated matters is to gather in a particular way with the presence of a Sheikh or another person to read the Qur'an on a dead person, then jointly (in congregation) make a supplication for the dead, and other innovated matters and rituals which have absolutely no evidence in Shariah. What is permissible in religion, though, is to make a supplication for the dead and to ask Allah to forgive him. It is confirmed in a Hadith that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) buried one of the companions and then said (to the companions who were present): "Seek forgiveness for your brother and ask Allah to make him firm as he is being questioned now." [Reported by Al-Hakim and it is an authentic Hadith]The same thing applies to reading the Qur'an individually in ones house or in the Mosque intending that its reward reaches the dead person. Some people of knowledge forbid this act giving as evidence the verse of Allah: {And that man can have nothing but what he does (good or bad),}[53:39].However, some other people of knowledge are of the opinion that it is permissible, according to the general evidences regarding the reward which reaches the person after his death, and this is the correct opinion, Insha Allah. However, this good deed should be without that type of rituals that a lot of people perform, like gathering and arranging for a Qur'an reciter in exchange of money and so on.As regards reading the Qur'an at the beginning of gatherings or permissible festivals and the like, there is no harm in it, because it is a way of remembrance and admonition which should be the first thing the audience hears. Question 100002: What does Islam say regarding some people who gather together and recite Qur'an on a specific day, for a dead person or because of building a new house, or any thing which brought happiness to them? Explain with some suggestions of Ulamah.
Answer:
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.Reciting the Qur'an is one of the best deeds and most pious acts to Allah. Furthermore, it is lawful to get together for such an action since the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "Whenever a group of people assemble in one of Allah's houses (mosques) for the sake of reciting the Book of Allah (Qur'an) and studying it among themselves, they will be blessed with the decent of tranquility. Allah's Mercy spreads over them; angels surround them; and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near to Him" [Reported by Imams al-Bukhari and Muslim ].If such people gather together for the purpose mentioned above in the Hadith, then it is legal. But, if it is meant to meet and recite collectively, then it is a form of innovation. It is also a form of innovation to specify a place, time, manner or number for such a work. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "Avoid invented matters (in religion), since every invented matter is Bid'ah (innovation and novelty in religion)" [ al-Tirmizi ].Therefore, we state that the situation specified in your question constitutes a Bid'ah. But, praying to Allah to grant the reward of reciting the Qur'an to some dead is legal but without specifying a given day for that. For more details, please read Fatwa: 82681.Allah knows best. Question 117350: Assalamu AlaikumDear Shiekh,My sister was having a pre-marital affair and was going out with the boy. She would listen to anyone and we didnt have control over her going out. The guy according our finding was very bad in all ways. As sister was extremely stubborn we gave her in marriage to same guy mid June 2018 to avoid any haram happening before marriage. I was the Wali as my father has passed away. She gave birth to a normal child early December 2018, meaning only five and half months after marriage. It is very likely this child is as a result of zina. I have not spoken to my sister or visited her since then. She calls me to inform the birth but I ignored her calls. Kindly advice Islamically what I should be doing.Salams
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger.Your sister establishing an affectionate relationship with that man before marriage is wrong and evil. Girls taking boyfriends (or boys taking girlfriends) is a matter of the Jaahiliyyah (Pre-Islamic Era of Ignorance) and Islam abolished it.Allah Says (what means): {They should be] chaste, neither [of] those who commit unlawful intercourse randomly nor those who take [secret] lovers.} [Quran 4:25] You should have prevented her from this evil as you are her guardian. Allah Says (what means): {Men are in charge of women.} [Quran 4:25]Guardianship and being in charge mean protecting the worldly and religious interests. As-Sadi said:"{Men are in charge of women} this means that men are in charge of women in terms of obliging them to fulfill the rights of Allah due on them by observing His obligations and preventing them from committing evils. Men are obliged to enforce this." [End of quote]Forbidding evil is obligatory according to ones ability. Abu Saeed Al-Khudri narrated that he heard the Prophet (saw) say: "Whoever amongst you sees an evil, he should change it with his hand (i.e. physically); if he is unable, then he should change it with his tongue (i.e. verbally); and if he is unable, then he should change it with his heart (by detesting it in his heart), and that is the weakest level of faith." [Muslim]. If a woman gives birth to a child in a period of less than six months of her marriage, then the child should not be traced to the fornicator (or adulterer), but it should be traced back to her, according to the view of the majority of the scholars, and this is the view that we adopt here in Islamweb.Nonetheless, some jurists are of the view that if the fornicator accepts to trace the child back to him, then it is acceptable. Nevertheless, it is very important to mention here that the six months should be calculated according to the lunar months, and not the solar months. So, please be heedful of this. Therefore, if the child is born in six lunar months, then it is his son and is traced back to him.If we presume that this child was the result of Zina (fornication or adultery), then if she repents and turns to Allah, you are not allowed to abandon her. As a matter of fact, even if she does not repent, it is permissible to keep ties with her, and it may be that keeping ties with her is better. Deserting a person or keeping ties with them depends on the benefit resulting from this, as stated by the scholars. Question 120246: it's about adoption, after you give your child legally to some one, is it legaly possible to ask back the child after couple of years. now the child is so attached to the adopted parents and they are very caring. the biological mother now asking the baby back and left her husband and living with her parents and keeping her other two children with her. what the husband can do in this?
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger. We have already issued Fatwa 84422 that adoption is prohibited in Islam, and man-made laws cannot forbid what is permissible and cannot permit what is forbidden. In case a man gives his child away to live with other people, he may take him back whenever he wishes because this is not included in the gift which one cannot take back, as the matter is about a human being. Therefore, we advise this man to take his child back and endeavour to bring his wife back to his home for family reunion, and he should fulfil his obligation towards his children as Allaah entrusted him to do so. He should also remember the saying of the Prophet (saw) : "All of you are guardians and all of you will be questioned about those under your guardianship." Allaah Knows best. (Source: islam_web)

Dear brother, accept the true religion of Islam and embrace it as soon as possible. Know that only by accepting Islam that Allah will wipe out all your past sins, no matter how big or grave they were, whether it is homosexuality or anything else.Allah Says in the Quran (what means): {Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them.} [Quran 8:38]
If you accept Islam, Allah will take care of you, protect you and bless you to avoid this bad practice which was known in the nation of the Prophet Loot and Allah destroyed it all by a severe torment. Allah raised it to the sky and then threw it upside down to the earth.
We advise you to do the following to get rid of this evil.
1. Keep reminding yourself of the punishment, which afflicted the people of Loot .2. Hasten to marry since marriage helps one to protect his private parts and to lower his gaze from forbidden things.3. Remind yourself also of the bad diseases carried by this practice.4. The main and most important factor that will make you avoid this evil habit is to keep in mind that Allah Almighty is always watching you and He is Aware of all your deeds and acts. 5. Check Islamic websites for advice.

Question 104098: I am a young man from Gaza who plans to relocate to Norway after graduation and marry a relative of mine there. How can I be a caller to Islam over there? I need a methodology to follow, . For example, what books should I start to study to be effective and persuasive in my Da'wah?
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger. Our dear questioner is worthy of praise for having such an enthusiastic and earnest motivation to serve the religion of Allaah the Almighty. This should be the case with every Muslim who believes in the Hereafter and in the eternal pleasure that Allaah The Almighty has prepared in Paradise for those who strive to support the religion of Allaah and to help it prevail over all other religions.Anyone who believes in the eternal, unchangeable pleasure of Paradise with its women, palaces, rivers and trees, as promised by Allaah The Almighty for such people, will give no weight to this vanishing worldly life. Indeed, this world is but a venue of trials, transient joys and unsettled living. In view of the obvious contrast, how can a sane person be occupied with this world and forsake the eternal bliss of Paradise? With such a comparison in mind, many a virtuous young Muslim has found his way to the Hereafter. Our first advice is that Gaza is in dire need for its sons to remain in it. As such, it is your duty to remain there. As to your question on traveling abroad for marriage and practicing Da'wah, kindly refer to the following Fataawa for related information: 86405, 82552.Whoever wants to call others to Allaah The Almighty has to combine an understanding of religion with an understanding of reality and current affairs from an Islamic perspective. You are primarily required to learn and apply what you intend to invite others to. The worthiest thing of learning and of inviting others to is sound beliefs, which can only be found in Islam. There are many books on Islamic 'Aqeedah (Islamic creed and belief). There are also different books that discuss what a Muslim needs in his worship and dealings with others, so we recommend you enlighten yourself in this regard as well.We ask Allaah The Almighty to guide all people to do what He likes.

Gel in the hair and Wudu
Question 109820: I want to know if my Wudu will be accepted, as I apply gel to my hair. So when I wipe the head with my wet hand, if I have gel in my hair, will this affect my Wudu.
Question 109820: I want to know if my Wudu will be accepted, as I apply gel to my hair. So when I wipe the head with my wet hand, if I have gel in my hair, will this affect my Wudu.
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions. If the substance you are using is solid and impermeable that prevents water from reaching the hair then the ablution is not valid; you must remove it. If one performs ablution without removing the substance then his ablution is not valid. If the oil or cream are not solid but they left only their impression on the body like brightness or moistness then the ablution is valid. In this case, the person should pass his hand over his all parts to be certain that the water has actually reached them since the oil or cream may prevent the water from the parts. On the other hand, we inform the brother that generally gel is made from gelatin which consists of animal derivatives. If it is the case then its lawfulness depends on the animals, whether they slaughtered according to Islam or not, and whether the animals themselves were lawful or not? Any part derived by a dead animal which is not slaughtered, or pork is forbidden. So using them or eating them is forbidden in Islam.Allaah knows best. (Source: islam_web)

Is gelatine haram?

Shukran.
Almighty Allah has blessed His servants by creating all kinds of provision on earth for them and He has permitted them to eat everything that is Halal (permissible) and good. Allah says: "O mankind! Eat of that which is lawful and wholesome in the earth, and follow not the footsteps of the devil. Lo! He is an open enemy for you." (Al-Baqarah: 168)
However, Allah forbids a limited number of foods that are bad and can be detrimental to one's health. He Almighty says: "Say: I find not in that which is revealed unto me naught prohibited to an eater that he eat thereof, except it be carrion, or blood poured forth, or swine flesh for that verily is foul or the abomination which was immolated to the name of other than Allah. But whose is compelled (thereto), neither craving nor transgressing (for him) Lo! Your Lord is Forgiving, Merciful." (Al-An`aam: 145)
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, has forbidden Muslims to eat any carnivorous animal with fangs and any bird having talons. (Narrated by Muslim) He is also reported to have forbidden the flesh of domesticated donkeys. (Narrated by Al-Bukhari)
As far as the Islamic ruling on gelatin is concerned, Dr. Su`aad Salih, professor of Fiqh at Al-Azhar Univ., gives the following Fatwa:
"Gelatin is a brittle substance extracted by boiling bones, hoofs, and animal tissues. So it depends on the animal itself. If it is an animal whose meat is Halal, such as cow, camel, sheep and so on, then gelatin is Halal, and so is the case with all foods prepared from it. However, if the animal is of Haram meat such as pigs, then the gelatin made of it is unlawful.
Thus, gelatin is Halal unless it is derived from an animal whose meat is Haram to consume. This is the ruling on gelatin extracted from animals. As for vegetable and artificial gelatin, they are Halal and there is nothing wrong in eating and using them."
As for gelatin extracted from animals that have not been slaughtered according to Shari`ah, Sheikh `Abdus-Sattar F. Sa`eed, Professor of the Exegesis of the Qur'an at Al-Azhar Univ., gives the following Fatwa:
"If the animal is slaughtered by one of the People of the Scripture, or if the butcher is unknown, then the meat is Halal and the gelatin is Halal too. However, if the animal is slaughtered by means of electric shock, suffocation, and other unlawful ways, then the meat is Haram and gelatin is Haram too, because it is a product of that unlawful animal."

Question 123180: Is kosher gelatin Halaal or Haraam?
Question 123180: Is kosher gelatin Halaal or Haraam?
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger. If gelatin is taken from the meat of an animal that we are Islamicly allowed to eat and it is slaughtered according to Islamic rites, then it is permissible for us to eat it.However, if it is taken from a dead animal or an animal that is not slaughtered according to Islamic rites, then it is considered as a portion of a dead animal, and thus, it is forbidden to eat it or to use it as an ingredient in any food or drink.Based on the above, if the kosher (that is mentioned in the question) is taken from the meat of an animal that we are allowed to eat and is slaughtered according to Islamic rites, then it is permissible for us to eat it, but if it is taken from an animal that we are not allowed to eat or an animal that we are allowed to eat but is not slaughtered according to Islamic rites, then it is not permissible for us to eat it.Finally, we warn the questioner against the publicity of some companies which deceives the buyers and only aim to sell their products, so you have to be cautious about this.Allaah Knows best. Question 123131: Is pig derived gelatin Haraam? In Europe we have food products that contain gelatin and I do not know whether I am allowed to consume them, especially that we can live without some of these products such as confectionery products.
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions. There is no doubt that gelatine extracted from pork is forbidden because Allaah forbade us from eating pork and considered it as an impurity. Allaah Says (which means): {Say, "I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine for indeed, it is impure or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allaah.}[Quran 6:145]. Therefore, it is not permissible to eat food which contains pork ingredients except in case of a necessity whereby if one does not eat it he will die, and we do not think that this is the case in your country.Allaah Knows best. Gelatin Takes the Ruling of the Animal From Which It Is Taken

Question 123280: I read and heard from some Sheikhs that Gelatin is considered Halal regardless of it's origin, while it's a derivative material having a different colour, shape and characteristics (Munqaleb) than it's origin. Is this true? Some gelatin is indicated as Beef Gelatin - is this considered Halal while it's from beef (we're in a Christian country).
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger.
Gelatin can be taken from an eatable animal that is slaughtered in a way accepted by the Sharee’ah. This kind of gelatin is lawful. On the other hand, if the gelatin is taken from a non-eatable animal, or an eatable animal but not slaughtered according to the Sharee’ah, then it is unlawful to use it unless there is a dire necessity for that because it is included in the things that are generally considered unlawful except in dire necessity.
Allah Says (what means): {…while He has explained in detail to you what He has forbidden you, excepting that to which you are compelled.} [Quran 6:119]
The above ruling concerns the gelatin that has not been transformed from its origin as a raw material. However, if this gelatin has been processed and has consequently changed into a different substance before being added to the food, then, in this case, this new product is lawful because the initial product (gelatin) has changed into a different product, hence a lawful product.
For more benefit on gelatin in food, please refer to Fataawa 160467, 275287, 82089, 89340, 90844, and 90894.

Question 123428: I know that gelatin can be either from pigs or from cows, so it is better not to eat anything that has gelatin in it, especially since I am living in the U.S. But I heard that glycerin and glycerides are also Haram, is that really true? I remember seeing those two words in almost every thing I ate, and I thought that they were just chemical substances.
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger.
Dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine etc. are made forbidden as Allah Says in the Quran (what means): {Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.} [Quran 5:3]
In another Surah (Chapter) regarding this, Allah Says (what means): {Say, “I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine - for indeed, it is impure - or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.”} [Quran 6:145]
In that manner, Allah forbade impure and harmful objects and made lawful every pure and useful object, as He mentioned this while reminding His favor on His Slaves by sending the Prophet Muhammad (saw) . Allah Says (what means): {…who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them.} [Quran 7:157]
Thereupon, you should recognize the ingredients of anything you want to use. Whatever contains any forbidden thing from the mentioned things, you should avoid it. And whatever does not contain that, then that is lawful and you may use it. If you had already used any forbidden thing, you should ask forgiveness from Allah. You are not supposed to pay any expiation except making repentance and asking pardon of Allah.

Gender and the child resembling his parents
Question 100648: Are there Hadeeths related to genetics? If so, will you please explain them?
Question 100648: Are there Hadeeths related to genetics? If so, will you please explain them?
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger.Allaah The Almighty supported His Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, , the Seal of the Messengers, with obvious and astonishing miracles. These have been mentioned in the Quran to meet the purpose for which it was revealed. This purpose is absolutely clear in the verse that reads (what means): {This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allaah.} [Quran 2:2]The Quran is a Book of guidance and miraculous signs. The Quran is beyond eloquence and cannot be imitated. Nevertheless, it is neither a book on medicine although it includes points which amaze physicians, nor a book on astronomy, although it includes points which astonish astronomers. The Quran is all this and more because it is the Words of Allaah, The Lord of the worlds, who created everything and determined it precisely. Allaah The Almighty has encompassing knowledge of every single atom and cell. The Sunnah is of the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, whose words and deeds were based on revelation.A case in point is the Hadeeth narrated by Anas that 'Abd Allaah ibn Salaam asked the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, three questions which could not be answered except by a prophet: What is the first sign of the final Hour? What is the first food which the people of Paradise will eat?Why does a child resemble his father or mother? The Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, told him that Jibreel (Gabriel) had informed him about those matters. 'Abd Allaah then told the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, that Jibreel was the enemy of the Jews. Answering the questions, the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, told 'Abd Allaah that the first sign of the Final Hour would be a fire which would drive people from the East to the West; and the first food which the people of Paradise would consume would be the appendix of a whales liver; and the reason behind a childs resemblance to one of his parents is that if the man had ejaculated first during intercourse, the child would resemble his father while if the wife ejaculated first, the child would look like his mother. Immediately, 'Abd Allaah testified that the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, was indeed the messenger of Allaah. [Al-Bukhari]Ibn 'Abbaas narrated that a group of the Jews came to the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, who pleaded with them appealing to their certainty that Allaah The Almighty was the only God, who revealed the Torah to Moosaa (Moses) . The Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, asked them whether they knew that the ejaculation fluid of men was white and thick and that the ejaculation fluid of women was yellow and runny. He further inquired if they knew that if a womans ejaculation fluid immersed in the mans, the child would be male, and if the man's immersed in the woman's, the child would be female. The Jews answered in the affirmative. [Ahmad: Al-Musnad]In Saheeh Muslim, there is a similar narration to this. It is narrated on the authority of Thawbaan quoting the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam. The essence of the above Hadeeths is that the precedence of ejaculation determines the resemblance of the child to the parent, and that ejaculation immersion determines gender. This has been scientifically established. Moreover, the sperm determines the sex of the child while the woman has no role in this process, she is just like the land which produces what has been implanted in it. Allaah The Almighty Says what means: {Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you.} [Quran 2:223] Ibn 'Umar and his father, narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, would often say the following supplication before leaving any gathering:Allaahumma, iqsim lanaa min khashyatika ma yahoolu baynanaa wa bayna ma'ysiyatic; wamin taa'atika ma tuballighunaa bihi jannatakk; wamina alyaqeeni ma tuhawwinu bihi 'alaynaa masaaiba addunyaa. Wa matti'na, Allaahumma, biasmaa'inaa, wa absaarinaa, wa quwwaatinaa, ma ahyaytanaa, wajalu alwaaritha minnaa. Waj'al tharanaa 'alaa man thalamanaa; wansurnaa 'alaa man 'aadaanaa. Walaa tajal museebatanaa fee deeninaa; walaa taj'al addunyaa akbara hamminaa walaa mablagha 'ilminaa. walaa tusallit 'alaynaa man laayarhamunaa. This means: O Allaah, endow us with the fear that will prevent us from committing sins; guide us to Your obedience which will admit us into Paradise; grace us with certainty with which You will alleviate our misfortunes. O Allaah, let us enjoy the soundness of our hearing, sight and strength for as long as we live. O Allaah, enable us retaliate against those who wronged us; give us victory over our enemies. O Allaah, make not our affliction to be in our religion, make the worldly life neither the center of our concern nor the end of our knowledge. O Allaah, make us inaccessible to those who are merciless to us. [At-Tirmithi]A part of this Hadeeth indicates the inheritance of qualities and senses such as hearing, sight and power. This is according to Ibn Hajar quoting the author of Al-Lam'aat. This issue has been established by empirical science. Question 124738: I feel myself half man and half a woman. I fear Allaah and I do not what to do. Sometimes I play with my body as a woman I refuse that but feel it sweet. Please advice me what to do. I was doing that since I was at the age of 12 year old and I'm now 36 still not married because I scared that I will not a full man. Also I can mention that I do not cum only with masturbation i.e. I do not have the unconscious during sleeping like all men. Please advice me what to do?
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger. First of all, you should know that you are being greatly tested, so you have to fear Allaah and be patient. Besides you are obliged to stop enjoying your body as if it is a woman's body, and you must stop masturbating, as both methods are forbidden. Allaah says (what means): {And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts). Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, for then, they are free from blame; But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors.}[Quran 23:5-7] Furthermore, we advise you to supplicate Allaah earnestly to repel from you the desires that you feel. Besides, you have to take the appropriate permissible means, as it could be a question of a physical or psychological problem; so you should consult the trustworthy doctors in this regard. Finally, it should be noted that having wet dreams is not a condition in determining manliness or not. You should not delay taking the initiative to getting married if you are able to, as Allaah could cure you by doing so. Besides, you should not take into consideration these whispers of the devil who strives to repel you from the good of this world and the Hereafter. Question 36369: Asalam wa Alaikum,
I am a newly married women and have ambarked on a journey through Islam with my husband. Allah (swt) has given me a man that is my better half and completes me in every way. He comes from a very large and AlHamdilla religious family. I am very thankful. I come from a modest family as well. My immediate family (brother, parents, sister) only lives in America. His family does not believe in free mixing which I undestand and follow in Islam. My family usually has Eid dinners, parties for New Years, and on occasions we will all get together. When my father came to America he came with his 4 friends and thus they have all gotten married and bore children who I consider as family since I have no extended cousins in America. I follow hijab rules and our gatherings are usally men on one side and women on the other; or men upstairs and women downstairs. But during the events we will run into each other from time and time. My husband wants to know if this is permissible. I am following hijab, I am not alone in a room with these non mahram men. My father is present at all times, and most importantly my husband is with me. Is this sort of free gender mixing allowed in Islam when my mahrams are present with me?
Answer: As-salamu-alaykum
Dear Asker:
Since you are with your husband you are safe to be in virtually any public place whenever necessary.
For men and women to be in one place is generally ok as long as they are not sitting close to one another. The nature of the circumstance should be put into consideration.

Gender of the newborn is irrelevant to the signs of purity
Question 109357: Is the post-partum period when the newborn is a male the same as when it is a female?
Question 109357: Is the post-partum period when the newborn is a male the same as when it is a female?
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger. Scholars stated that there are two signs, either of which indicates the end of menstruation or post-partum bleeding:1- Cessation of blood: this means that when a woman wipes her vagina with a piece of cotton or white cloth, she does not find any trace of blood. 2- Emission of white discharge which marks the end of menstruation or post-partum bleeding. It is the strongest evidence with which a woman realizes that she has become pure. It is narrated that women used to send pieces of cotton with yellowish traces to 'Aaishah and she would say to them: "Do not hasten until you see the white discharge," meaning purification from menstruation." [Maalik] These are the two signs of purification regardless whether the newborn is male or female. This ruling is general and the scholars did not provide a different ruling in this respect. Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger. The lineage of the Messenger of Allaah (saw) which all the scholars agree upon is: Muhammad (saw) ibn 'Abdullaah ibn 'Abdul-Muttalib ibn Haashim ibn 'Abd Manaaf ibn Qusayy ibn Kilaab ibn Murrah ibn Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib ibn Fihr ibn Malik ibn an-Nadhr ibn Kinanah ibn Khuzaymah ibn Mudrikah ibn Ilyaas ibn Mudhar ibn Nizaar ibn Ma'ad ibn 'Adnaan. There is no consensus regarding who goes beyond 'Adnaan. However, there is a consensus that 'Adnaan is among the offspring of Ismaa'eel .One of the narrations about the lineage of 'Adnaan gives him the following lineage: 'Adnaan ibn Udd ibn Muqrim, ibn Nahur ibn Yatrij ibn Yaarub ibn Yashjub ibn Thaabit ibn Ismaa'eel. The historians stated that Ismaa'eel had twelve sons; they were Nabt, Qa'dar, Owbeel, Mabsha, Mosmia, Dama, Mas, Odad, Watoor, Nafees Tama, and Qaidman. According to some Arab dialects, there is a slight change in the pronunciation of the above names; instead of Owbed they pronounce it as Awbal, Mobsha as Mobsham, Dama as Dma and then the other names as Heddad, Taim, Yatoor, Nofis and Qadmin. Some historians are of the opinion that the Prophet (saw) is from the children of Qedar ibn Ismaa'eel . (See Sifat as-Safwah written by Ibn al-Jawzi). They say an-Nabt is the son of Qa'dar ibn Ismaa'eel . As for the lineage of the Prophet (saw) Yoonus Imaam Ibn al-Jawzi wrote in his book (Al-Muntadhim): Yoonus ibn Matta, Matta is his father and he belongs to the children of Binyameen ibn Ya'qoob .Imaam Ibn Katheer reported from al-Haafith Ibn 'Asaakir that the lineage of the Prophet Zakariyya is as follows: Zakariyya bin Barkhiyah. It is also said that his father's name was Dan, or Zakariyya ibn Ladn, son of Muslim, son of Sadam, son of Hashyan ibn Daawood ibn Sulaymaan ibn Muslim ibn Siddeeq ibn Barkhiyah ibn Bla'tah ibn Nahoor ibn Shalorm ibn Bahna Shat ibn Enamin ibn Rahaban'am ibn Sulaymaan ibn Daawood, may Allaah exalt their mention.Allaah Knows best. Question 968: As Salaamu Alakium,
I am a muslima in the military and my feancia does not like that i can not cover while i am in uniform even if i
get a waiver to be able to wear my hijab indoors while in uniform and have a hat on indoors. He is in prison and is not able
to support me but i dont have a problem with that because i love him and am able to support myself. He has a problem with me
being in the military and would like me to get out but if i get out I wont have any where to go, no food, no job, no college, and nothing
of that matter. I think i am not doing wrong islamicly by being in the military because my intentions are to get an education in
islamic law, pay my debts off, support myself, be able to give charity, and so forth. I am only staying in the military untill my
contract is up 4 yrs. Then i want to be an islamic lawyer. How do i get my fiancea to understand that I am not disobaying the
deen by not being able to cover all the time and is he allowed to tell me to quit the military if he cannot support me if i do?
Please respond. As Sallamu Alakium
Answer: Dear Sr. A: As-salaamu alaykum. We cannot give you a complete answer to your question because you know best the condition you are living in. The best advice to you is to weigh all possible options: seeking the military, finding financial aid through college, working part time and going to school, and being in harmony with your future husband. Don't under-estimate the last one because it may change the way your relationship with him will be. You should define your priorities and see how you may achieve them the fastest possible way. My advice to you is usually to try to get out of school as soon as possible so that you may start achieving the noble goals you mentioned. Being in the military (or seeking any other four year job) before going to college, will delay achieving your goals but will give you financial security. Would going to college, working part-time, being involved in a local Islamic center etc. be a quicker and more rewarding alternative? Also, ask Allah with sincerity for help to get you out of your dilemma. We also pray that may Allah make your difficulties easy. Thank you for asking and God knows best (Source: IslamiCity)

Question 1561: I would like to live in an Islamic society where i
I could practice my religion and be around believers is there any community that you are aware of were I could live and work and be welcomed. InshaAllah
Answer: Dear Br. S. As-salaamu alaykum. There are many areas in the world where you can live Islamically in a peaceful way. We cannot recommend a specific area because the area may be good but your neighbors in that particular area may be bad, and that would defeat the whole purpose of your move. Therefore, it is all up to you to network with some good Muslim families who can recommend a place and arrange for you an easy switch. We have met genuine people literally in all areas of the world. Therefore, the Muslim world is vast. Also, if you live in the U.S. and are not able to move due to work or language problems, then, you may find it even easier to relocate to an area close to a mosque and an Islamic school, or even, found an Islamic community in your neighborhood. Whatever and wherever you decide to go, may Allah help you. Thank you for asking and God knows best.

In fatwa No. 177059, you said that if a person makes a general repentance for all the kufr/shirk acts that he has committed, even though he forgets some, it would be enough to get his sins forgiven by allah but what if he didn't know that some acts that he committed is kufr/shirk, would he still be forgiven even though he did not know that it was kufr/shirk?
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger. If a person commits an act of Kufr (unbelief) or Shirk (idolatry) and does not know that it is Kufr or Shirk, then he might be excused in principle in the sight of Allaah, so Allaah does not hold him accountable for this act and he is not considered as an unbeliever or idolater because if a person is unable to gain knowledge, he is excused due to his ignorance; Allaah says (what means): {And Allaah would not let a people stray after He has guided them until He makes clear to them what they should avoid. Indeed, Allaah is Knowing of all things.} [Quran 9:115]If we assumed that he was in a situation in which he was not excused for his ignorance, like if he was able to gain knowledge but did not seek it, then if he makes a general repentance, such an act of Kufr or Shirk would be covered by it. This is indeed a Favor and Mercy from Allaah but many people do not know it, and if they knew it, most of them are not grateful. For more benefit on the conditions of judging a person as an unbeliever, please refer to Fataawa 8106 and 87963.Allaah Knows best. Question 115697: What is the right thing to do with donations in the mosques? It was said that donations from the mosque should only be used in matters related to the mosque and it is impermissible to distribute them among the poor and needy. The donators who paid the money had the intention of seeking the reward of Allaah The Almighty or giving a continuous charity. There is a mosque in my country that has 92000 pounds and spends from this only on the mosque. Is this permissible?
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger. In principle, donations should be spent in the specific field that the donor intended. If nothing was intended by the donor but the authority that collects donations was collecting them for a declared purpose, then the donations should be given only for these purposes. If the donations were given for maintenance of the mosque, then they should only be spent in this as these donations take the same ruling as endowments. However, if donations were taken for general purposes, then any poor person who is in need should take from them. Allaah Knows best. (Source: islam_web)

Generational curse is false concept
Question 101642: Are there verses for generational curses that can be used to stop the curse?
Question 101642: Are there verses for generational curses that can be used to stop the curse?
Answer: All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad (saw) is His slave and Messenger. The generational curse which the Christians claim regarding the inherited curse has no basis. It is a false claim, and Allaah will not hold a person accountable for the sins committed by his father or his mother. Allaah says (what means): {And every soul earns not [blame] except against itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.} [Quran 6:164]The prominent scholar Ash-Shawkaani said in Fat-h Al-Qadeer, when interpreting this verse, "Meaning that a soul will not be held accountable for a sin or an act of disobedience committed by others; every evil done by any soul falls on it, and it does not go beyond it to others."Allaah is just and Most Merciful and He does not hold a person accountable for the sins committed by others. If a person is afflicted with harm, then it is permissible to treat him with the Quran, because we seek cure and treatment in the Quran for diseases, and it is permissible to ask Allaah with the Quran whatever needs one wishes, as Allaah says (what means): {And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers.} [Quran 17:82]Allaah also says (what means): {Say: It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure.} [Quran 41:44]Also, the Prophet (saw) said, "Recite the Quran and ask Allaah with it." [At-Tirmithi - Al-Albaani graded it hasan (good)]For more benefit, please refer to fatwa 104985.Allaah knows best. (Source: islam_web)

Question 125128: What is the Islamic view on preimplantation genetic diagnosis during invetro fertilisation? Can we destroy embryos carrying genes for diseases and thus avoid transfer of such embryos to the uterus of the patient?
Answer: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. Islam has urged people to study and has ordered them to use their minds and think of ways to improve their wellbeing. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): "Are those who know equal to those who know not?" It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allah's Signs and Verses).}[39:9]. He also Says: {They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world}[30:7]. Allah also Says: {Do not you then understand?} {will you not then take thought?}.There is no contradiction or conflict between the Islamic religion and the good science, which benefits humanity. In fact any knowledge - Sharia sciences or experimental sciences - that is needed by the Muslim community in its spiritual or material life is a common obligation on the Muslim Ummah as a whole. So it is an obligation on the Muslim Ummah that some of its sons master such sciences otherwise everyone in the Ummah commits a sin because the Ummah becomes dependent upon others. This, in turn, might weaken the Ummah causing its humiliation. Allah has made clear that the Cosmos is a vast place for meditation, research, and evidence of the greatness of The Creator, Allah The Almighty. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): { And on the earth are signs for those who have Faith with certainty,} [51:19, 20]. He also says: {We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their ownselves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Qur'an) is the truth.} [41: 53]. He says: {(Allah says to His Prophet Muhammad SAW): "Allah (Alone) created the heavens and the earth with truth (and none shared Him in their creation)." Verily! Therein is surely a sign for those who believe.} [29: 44].So, the discoveries that are common these days are all proofs of the greatness of the Creator. The person who sees these things should bear witness that there is no God but Allah and believe in His oneness and abide by His orders. All sciences and inventions should be surrounded by a fence of morals. They should also be tightly linked with the religions ethics and the true belief. Every science should be tightly linked with the Sharia as the latter is the scales by which everything is weighed, otherwise both the science and the scientist will be source of bad for the person. One of these discoveries is the Genome, which is the genetic map of the human being. We shall discuss here the first step of this discovery. The thought about setting a genetic map for all people in America started in 1988 in February. The federal council of research along with the federal academy of science constituted a committee to make up this map. And the project started in October 1990. At first it was an American project which was supposed to last for fifteen years.Since the project was so huge and so ambitions more countries joined it and several billion dollars were assigned for it. The first and most important part of the project is finished and the second part will end in 2003 two years before its initial deadline. This project is meant - according to those responsible of it - to be a real beginning of a "full knowledge" of all that affects the health of the human being the development, the evolution, the diagnosis in the future, as well as the treatment at the level of the genetic agent and the knowledge of the different genes that cause illnesses and diseases. This project has its advantages but also its disadvantages. It can help diagnosis cancer in its early stage as well as the genetic illnesses, which reach 500 illnesses. But its disadvantages are numerous and extremely dangerous on both the social and moralistic levels. The knowledge of the genetic map of the person could be used for instance as a justification to make a criminal innocent for the reason that he carries a gene that is responsible for his anomalous behaviour. It could also cause disastrous psychological consequences for a person if he knows for example, that he carries a gene responsible for a very grave disease such as cancer; or he might lose motivation and ambition if he knows he lacks genes for intelligence. This science could be used to subjugate people by inventing serums or vaccines against the genes for courage, turning these people into a "herd of domesticated animals". Its effect would then be more disastrous than the use of atomic weapons. But, as we mentioned before, every science has to be surrounded by a "fence" of the right religion and morals so that people will benefit from it without being adversely affected by it.So any science that is devoid of religious and moral guidance is turned against people and has negative effects upon them. On the other hand, the fact that these genes are the mechanisms for certain illnesses or the capacity for certain action or behaviour is known only to Allah because even if we know the function of these genes other factors in the life of the person give him the right of choice for his action and behaviour. The Prophet said: "Every newborn is born with a natural predisposition". This is a hint from the Prophet about the environment and its influence on the person's behaviour. If, for instance, there is an environment conducive for a particular illness and there is a predisposition for it, it is likely to occur. All this results in yet another kind of fatalism imposed by western society and propaganda for spreading crimes and anarchy. As for abortion of fetuses that carry defective genes, this is forbidden even in the first 120 days, i.e. before life is infused in the fetus, because this is not a sound reason as this illness will not develop except with the existence of other factors. But if there is a medical report from authentic and specialized doctors proving that this fetus carries a very dangerous disease that could not be cured, and that it will be a source of unhappiness for its parents if it survives and if this is done before the end of the first 120 days and if its parents apply for its abortion, then there is no harm in doing so.But, if 120 days have passed from the beginning of pregnancy, it becomes forbidden to make abortion because this is synonymous to killing a person without any right to do so. If it is proved without any doubt that not aborting this fetus will endanger the life of his mother, then it is lawful to cause it to be aborted whether it is carrying a dangerous disease or not.Allah knows best. Genetic Engeering

Question 3547: Genetic Engineering - is this acceptable to Islam? In some cases, genes from animals
are implanted into seeds of plants. Does that make the plant haraam?
Answer: Dear Br. S. As-salaamu alaykum. Genetic engineering is an extremely broad field that is applied in many fields, including medicine, agriculture (plants and animals), environment, etc. As you know, genetic engineering is the science of altering genes to produce new genetic traits. So, it is a technique, nothing less, nothing more. Some of its uses are considered acceptable in Islam while other ones are not. There is nothing wrong with gene alterations and implantation between animals and plants, or for human beings if the process helps productivity or cures patients, or has positive contributions to humanity and to the earth. However, when the process starts involving manipulation and implantation for unethical and Islamically unacceptable activities, then the process becomes haram. Also, if genetic engineering starts reducing the biological diversity on earth and will definitively lead to natural catastrophes, then the process becomes Haram. As of now, much discussion is being raised about the potential of genetic engineering. Instead of outlawing it altogether or making acceptable altogether, Muslim scholars should judge it on a case by case basis. Similar to nuclear technology, it can be used for peaceful or for harmful purposes. Thank you for asking and God knows best. (Source: IslamiCity)

Question 787: In brief, what are Islam's reflections on cloning? Do we
belief that it is ok to clone humans and animals? Thank
you very much! May Allah be with you. -Madiha
Answer: Dear Sr. M. As-Salaamu Alaykum. This response will be divided into two parts, genetic engineering in general, and human cloning in particular. First of all, there is nothing in the Quran specifically talking about genetic manipulation or human cloning since genetic engineering is a new field. In addition, the Quran is a book of guidance not of science, and it is an important source for us to derive certain rulings and guidelines of our behavior. The field of genetic engineering is very vast and well connected to ethics as much as other sciences. As a matter of fact, nuclear engineering has much more potential to harm human beings than human cloning. In general, we cannot prohibit genetic research or allow it totally. Each manipulation (whether on plants, animals, or human beings) has to weighed according to its purpose, it usefulness, and the intention of the scientist. If the genetic manipulation carries benefit to human beings, to the society, or to the environment, then it should be allowed. Modifying a gene to prevent certain diseases for humans and animals, and to increase agricultural yield and make certain living species disease resistant is permissible. However, what is not permissible is to get into the scientific exercise of changing the natural course of human reproduction, such as changing the sex of a fetus. Also, what is totally prohibited is to start cross breeding and genetically manipulating genes between human and animals to give new living beings that are neither humans nor animals, but closer to monsters. Since cloning is an issue that has only appeared since few days, it is still a very new field that needs a lot of evaluation and discussions between scientists and Muslims scholars to grasp what the whole thing is about. It is still too soon to make a comprehensive judgment on this topic. We will not take a reactionary position and fall into giving wrong judgments out of ignorance. Thank you for asking and we hope to be able to answer you more specifically in the future. And Allah knows best. (Source: IslamiCity)
