Sometimes, some seemingly insignificant actions that we take, would have a major impact on our life, positively or negatively!

In my attempt to change, I may set a big goal. But sometimes all I can do toward that goal is a small, seemingly insignificant step. Yet, this small step can go a long way. God does bless our efforts and take them further than we expect.

Sometimes looking the other way, greeting a homeless person, forgiving someone discreetly in your heart, switching a TV channel…sometimes, simple actions like these can go a long way with the support of God. This might be one of the meanings of Al-Hadeeth Al-Qudsi, where He says:

“If my servant draws near to Me a hand’s length, I draw near to him an arm’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.” (Sahih Bukhari)

إذا تقرب العبد إلي شبراً تقربت إليه ذراعاً، وإذا تقرب إلي ذراعاً تقربت منه باعاً، وإذا أتاني يمشي أتيته هرولة

But I should remind myself that this small step is NOT the final and ultimate achievement I’m aiming for, I still want the big change! But for now, these small steps are all I can do, and I should never think of them as insignificant! I remember the Prophet’s saying:

“Do not dismiss as insignificant any good deed, even if just meeting your brother with a smiling face” (Sahih Muslim)

لا تحقرن من المعروف شيئا ولو أن تلقى أخاك بوجه طلق

Similarly, sometimes we take some seemingly small actions that end up eventually hurting ourselves or others. I may type a word, an emoticon, have a facial expression,…that goes a long way.

I pray for Allah to guide our actions toward that which pleases Him!
