Sahih Muslim 1178a (Book 15, Hadith 4) #9939
Clothing Alternatives for Muhrims

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that if someone does not have the proper clothing for a Muhrim, they can wear trousers and socks instead.

Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported: I heard Allah's Messenger say as he was delivering an address: So far as the trousers are concerned, one who does not find lower garment, he may wear them; as also socks, he may wear them who does not find shoes. It concerns the Muhrim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Wear trousers and socks if you don't have access to traditional garments for religious occasions.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the clothing that is appropriate to wear when in a state of Muhrim. A Muhrim is someone who has entered into an Islamic pilgrimage or journey. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was teaching his followers that if they do not have the proper clothing for such an occasion, it is acceptable to wear trousers and socks instead. He was emphasizing the importance of being modestly dressed while on a religious journey, but also understanding that sometimes people may not have access to all of the necessary items. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our dress code when engaging in religious activities, but also shows us how compassionate and understanding Islam can be towards those who are less fortunate or lack resources.
