Sahih Muslim 1136b (Book 13, Hadith 176) #9815
Fasting on 'Ashura and Keeping Children Occupied

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sending a messenger to the villages of the Ansar to inform them about fasting on the day of 'Ashura. It also mentions that when children asked for food, they were given toys made out of wool to play with so they would forget their hunger and complete their fast.

Khalid b. Dhakwan reported: I asked Rubayyi' daugther of Mu'awwidh about fasting on the day of 'Ashura. Thereupon she said: The Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) sent his messenger to the villages of the Ansar, and the rest of the hadith is the same (but with this variation that one of the Companions) said:" We used to make toys out of wool and took (them to the mosque) along with us. When they (the children) asked us for food, we gave them these toys to play with, and these made them forgetful till they completed their fast".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about fasting on the day of 'Ashura, which is an important religious observance in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad sent a messenger to inform people in villages about this practice and how it should be done properly. When children asked for food during this time, adults gave them toys made out of wool as a distraction so that they could complete their fast without being too hungry or distracted by food cravings. This teaches us that we should take care not only for our own spiritual needs but also those around us who may need help or guidance in fulfilling religious obligations such as fasting during Ramadan or other special days like 'Ashura. It also shows us how important it is to keep children occupied with activities that are both fun and beneficial for them spiritually as well as physically.
