Sahih Muslim 1131b (Book 13, Hadith 167) #9806
Fasting on 'Ashura Day

SUMMARY: The people of Khaibar observed fast on the day of 'Ashura and gave their women ornaments and beautiful dresses to wear, but the Messenger of Allah instructed them to only observe fast on this day.

Abu Musa reported that the people of Khaibar (most of them were Jews) observed fast on the day of 'Ashura and they treated it as 'Id and gave their women ornaments and beautiful dresses to wear. The Messenger of Allah said: You (only) observe fast on this day.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings, Abide by religious instructions given by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith is about the people of Khaibar, who were mostly Jews, observing fast on the day of 'Ashura. They treated it as an Eid and gave their women ornaments and beautiful dresses to wear. However, when the Messenger of Allah was informed about this he instructed them to only observe fast on that day. This hadith teaches us that we should not celebrate any religious occasion in a way that is not prescribed by Islam. We should follow what has been taught by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instead of following our own customs or traditions which may be contrary to Islamic teachings.
