Sahih al-Bukhari 1002 (Book 14, Hadith 13) #967
Reciting Qunut for Punishment

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) reciting Qunut for a period of one month, asking Allah to punish those who broke a peace treaty with him.

Narrated 'Asim: I asked Anas bin Malik about the Qunut. Anas replied, "Definitely it was (recited)". I asked, "Before bowing or after it?" Anas replied, "Before bowing". I added, "So and so has told me that you had informed him that it had been after bowing". Anas said, "He told an untruth (ie "was mistaken," according to the Hijazi dialect). Allah's Messenger recited Qunut after bowing for a period of one month". Anas added, "The Prophet sent about seventy men (who knew the Qur'an by heart) towards the pagans (of Najd) who were less than they in number and there was a peace treaty between them and Allah's Messenger (but the Pagans broke the treaty and killed the seventy men). So Allah's Messenger recited Qunut for a period of one month asking Allah to punish them".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of reciting Qunut, which is a special supplication made during prayer. It was narrated by Anas bin Malik that he asked the Prophet about the Qunut and he replied that it was definitely recited before bowing in prayer. He then explained that this practice was done for one month after some people broke a peace treaty with him and killed seventy men who knew the Qur'an by heart. The Prophet asked Allah to punish them through his supplications in order to restore justice and uphold righteousness. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to maintain peace and justice in our lives, even if it means seeking divine help through prayer or other means when necessary. We should also remember that Allah will always respond to our prayers if we are sincere in our intentions and have faith in His power.
