Sahih Muslim 1034 (Book 12, Hadith 123) #9522
The Excellence of Charity

SUMMARY: Giving charity is an excellent act, and it is better to start with the members of your own household.

Hakim b. Hizam reported Allah's Messenger having said this: The most excellent Sadaqa or the best of Sadaqa is that after giving which the (giver) remains rich and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin from the members of your household.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous and kind towards others; Start with members of your own household; Give out from what you have in abundance rather than from what little you possess; Remain rich after giving charity.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the excellence of giving charity, or Sadaqa. It encourages us to be generous and kind towards others, especially those in our own households. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that it is better to give from what we have with our upper hand than from our lower hand, meaning that it is more rewarding if we give out of what we have in abundance rather than out of what little we possess. He also taught us that even though giving charity can make us feel poor, if done correctly it can actually make us richer in the long run as Allah rewards those who are generous and kind-hearted.
