Sahih Muslim 1032b (Book 12, Hadith 120) #9519
The Greatest Charity

SUMMARY: Giving charity while healthy and close-fisted is the greatest in reward, and one should not wait until they are about to die to give charity.

Abu Huraira reported that a person came to the Messenger of Allah and said: Messenger of Allah, which charity is the greatest in reward? (The Prophet said): By your father, beware, you should give charity (in a state when you are) healthy and close-fisted, haunted by the fear of poverty, and still hoping to live (as rich). And you must not defer charity (to the time) when you are about to die, and would then say:" This is for so and so, and this for so and so". It has already become the possession of so and so.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity when healthy and close-fisted.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of giving charity while one is still healthy and close-fisted, meaning that they are not overly generous with their money. It also warns against waiting until one is about to die before giving away their possessions as it will be too late for them to benefit from it. The hadith emphasizes that the greatest reward comes from giving charity when one is still able to enjoy its benefits, rather than waiting until it's too late. This teaches us that we should be generous with our wealth while we can still reap its rewards in this life and the next.
