Sahih Muslim 957 (Book 11, Hadith 94) #9364
Reciting Takbirs on Funerals

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reciting a certain number of takbirs on funerals.

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abu Laila that Zaid used to recite four takbirs on our funerals and he recited five takbirs on one funeral. I asked him the reason (for this variation), to which he replied: The Messenger of Allah recited thus.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) practice of reciting a certain number of takbirs, or declarations of Allah's greatness, during funerals. According to the hadith, 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abu Laila noticed that Zaid would recite four takbirs at some funerals and five at others. When asked why there was this variation in his recitations, Zaid replied that it was because the Messenger of Allah did it this way. This shows us how important it is to follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet and emulate his practices as much as possible in our daily lives. It also teaches us to be mindful and respectful when attending funerals by following Islamic etiquette such as reciting takbirs for those who have passed away.
