Sahih Muslim 945a (Book 11, Hadith 67) #9337
The Reward for Attending Funerals

SUMMARY: Attending a funeral and staying until the burial of the deceased will be rewarded with two huge mountains worth of reward.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying: He who attends the funeral till the prayer is offered for (the dead), for him is the reward of one qirat, and he who attends (and stays) till he is buried, for him is the reward of two Qirats. It was said: What are the Qirats? He said: They are equivalent to two huge mountains. Two other narrators added: Ibn 'Umar used to pray and then depart (without waiting for the burial of the dead). When the tradition of Abu Huraira reached him, he said:" We have lost many Qirats".

QUICK LESSONS:
Attend funerals, Stay till after prayer & burial
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about attending funerals and how it is rewarded by Allah. It was narrated by Abu Huraira that Prophet Muhammad said that whoever attends a funeral until the prayer is offered for the dead will be rewarded with one qirat, which is equivalent to two huge mountains. If they stay until the burial of the dead, they will be rewarded with two qirats instead. Ibn 'Umar used to pray and then leave before waiting for the burial but when he heard this hadith he realized how much reward he had missed out on. This teaches us that attending funerals and staying until after burial are acts of worship that are greatly rewarded by Allah. We should strive to attend funerals whenever possible in order to gain these rewards from Allah.
