Sahih Muslim 819a (Book 6, Hadith 330) #9055
Seven Modes of Recitation

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was taught by the angel Gabriel to recite in one style, but he kept asking for more until he reached seven modes of recitation.

Ibn 'Abbas reported Allah's Messenger as saying: Gabriel taught me to recite in one style. I replied to him and kept asking him to give more (styles), till he reached seven modes (of recitation). Ibn Shibab said: It has reached me that these seven styles are essentially one, not differing about what is permitted and what is forbidden.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for knowledge and be persistent in its pursuit
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's experience with learning how to recite the Quran. He was initially taught by the angel Gabriel to recite in one style, but he kept asking for more until he reached seven modes of recitation. These seven styles are essentially one and do not differ when it comes to what is permitted and what is forbidden. This hadith teaches us that we should strive for knowledge and be persistent in our pursuit of it. It also shows us that even though there may be different ways of doing something, they can all lead to the same outcome if done correctly.
