Sahih Muslim 763f (Book 6, Hadith 221) #8946
Praying Without Ablution

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) got up in the night to perform a short ablution and prayed without performing ablution again before the dawn prayer.

Ibn 'Abbas reported that he spent a night in the house of his maternal aunt, Maimuna. The Messenger of Allah got up at night and performed a short ablution (taking water) from the water-skin hanging there. (Giving a description of the ablution Ibn 'Abbas said: It was short and performed with a little water) I also got up and did the same as the Messenger of Allah had done. I then came (to him) and stood on his left. He then made me go around to his right side. He then observed prayer and went to sleep till he began to snore. Bilal came to him and informed him about the prayer. He (the Holy Prophet) then went out and observed the dawn prayer without performing ablution. Sufyan said: It was a special (prerogative of the) Apostle of Allah for it has been conveyed to us that the eyes of the Messenger of Allah sleep, but his heart does not sleep.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of your prayers, Strive for excellence in your worship

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) practice of praying without performing ablution again before the dawn prayer. It was narrated by Ibn 'Abbas, who spent a night in his maternal aunt's house and saw how the Prophet got up at night to perform a short ablution with little water from a water-skin hanging there. He then observed prayer and went back to sleep until Bilal came to inform him about the dawn prayer. The Prophet then went out and observed it without performing another ablution, as this was his special prerogative due to his heart not sleeping even when his eyes did. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of our prayers even when we are tired or sleepy, as it is an important part of our faith that should not be neglected or taken lightly. We should also strive for excellence in our worship by being mindful of all its details such as making sure we have performed wudu properly before each prayer time.
