The Night Prayer of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prayed 13 rak'ahs in the night prayer, 8 of which were followed by Witr and two rak'ahs sitting. He also observed two rak'ahs between the Adhan and Iqama of the dawn prayer.

Abu Salama asked 'A'isha about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah She said: He observed thirteen rak'ahs (in the night prayer). He observed eight rak'ahs and would then observe Witr and then observe two rak'ahs sitting, and when he wanted to bow he stood up and then bowed down, and then observed two rak'ahs in between the Adhan and Iqama of the dawn prayer.
وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ يَحْيَى، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ عَنْ صَلاَةِ، رَسُولِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ يُصَلِّي ثَلاَثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يُصَلِّي ثَمَانَ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ يُوتِرُ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَرْكَعَ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ بَيْنَ النِّدَاءِ وَالإِقَامَةِ مِنْ صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains how Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to pray at night. He would observe thirteen rak’ahs in total; eight of them followed by witr and then two more while sitting down. Additionally he would observe two more rak’ahs between the adhan and iqamah for fajar prayer. This hadith teaches us that we should follow the example set by our beloved prophet in our prayers as it is a way to get closer to Allah SWT. We should strive to make sure that we are praying with full concentration and devotion so that we can reap its rewards both in this world and hereafter inshaAllah!
