Reciting Verses During Supererogatory Prayers

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to recite certain verses from the Quran during his supererogatory prayers.

Ibn 'Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah used to recite in the two (supererogatory) rak'ahs of the dawn prayer: " Say: We believed in Allah and what was revealed to us" and that which is found in Surah Ali-'lmran:" Come to that word (creed) which is common between you and us" (3. 64).
وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الأَحْمَرُ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يَقْرَأُ فِي رَكْعَتَىِ الْفَجْرِ ‏{‏ قُولُوا آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْنَا‏}‏ وَالَّتِي فِي آلِ عِمْرَانَ ‏{‏ تَعَالَوْا إِلَى كَلِمَةٍ سَوَاءٍ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمْ‏}‏

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn 'Abbas states that the Prophet Muhammad used to recite certain verses from the Quran during his supererogatory prayers. This is a reminder for us to take time out of our day and dedicate it to Allah in prayer and reciting His words. It is important for us to remember that we should not just be praying but also taking time out of our day to read and understand what Allah has revealed in His book, the Quran. We should strive to make sure that we are reading and understanding what Allah has said so that we can live our lives according to His will. This hadith teaches us about dedicating time for prayer as well as taking time out of our day for reading and understanding the words of Allah.
