Reciting Verses in Supererogatory Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet recited two verses from the Quran in his supererogatory prayer.

Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah recited in the two (supererogatory) rak'ahs of the dawn (prayer): " Say: O unbelievers," (Qur'an, cix) and" Say: Allah is one" (CXII).
حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ، وَابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ، - هُوَ ابْنُ كَيْسَانَ - عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَرَأَ فِي رَكْعَتَىِ الْفَجْرِ ‏{‏ قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ‏}‏ وَ ‏{‏ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ‏}‏

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known to recite two specific verses from the Quran during his supererogatory prayers. These two verses were “Say O unbelievers” and “Say Allah is one”. This hadith teaches us that we should recite verses from the Quran when we are praying our supererogatory prayers as it will bring us closer to Allah and help us remember His greatness and power. It also reminds us that we should always strive to be believers in Allah and not be swayed by any other beliefs or ideologies.
