Sahih Muslim 694c (Book 6, Hadith 23) #8748
Praying Two or Four Rak’ah at Mina

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the caliphs after him prayed two rak'ahs at Mina, but 'Uthman observed four rak'ahs. When Ibn 'Umar prayed with the Imam, he said four rak'ahs, but when he observed prayer alone, he said two rak'ahs.

Ibn 'Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah said two rak'ahs at Mina, and Abu Bakr after him, and 'Umar after Abu Bakr, and 'Uthman at the beginning of his caliphate; then 'Uthman observed four rak'ahs, and when Ibn 'Umar prayed with the Imam, he said four rak'ahs, but when he observed prayer alone, he said two rak'ahs.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the number of rak'ahs that should be performed while praying in Mina. According to this hadith, Prophet Muhammad and the caliphs after him used to pray two rak'ahs at Mina. However, Uthman began his caliphate by observing four rak'ahs instead of two. When Ibn Umar prayed with an Imam he also followed suit and offered four rak’ah but when praying alone he only offered two as was done by Prophet Muhammad and other caliphs before him. This hadith teaches us that we should follow the example set by our beloved prophet in all matters related to religion even if it differs from what others are doing around us because it is a sign of faithfulness towards Allah's commands and teachings which are always right no matter what people think or do around us.
