Sahih Muslim 663c (Book 5, Hadith 349) #8660
The Reward of Proximity

SUMMARY: A man from the Ansar was living far away from Medina, but he still attended all of the Prophet's prayers. His friends suggested that he buy a donkey to make his journey easier, but he refused because he wanted to be close to the Prophet. The Prophet then told him that his reward would be what he expected.

Ubayy b. Ka'b reported: There was a person among the Ansar whose house was situated at the farthest end of Medina, but he never in missed any prayer along with the Messenger of Allah . We felt pity for him and said to him: O, so and so, had you bought a donkey it would have saved you from the burning sand and would have saved you from the reptiles of the earth. He said: Listen I by Allah, I do not like my house to be situated by the side of Muhammad . I took (these words of his) ill and came to the Messenger of Allah and informed him about (these words). He (the Holy Prophet) called him and he said exactly like that (which he had mentioned to Ubbay b. Ka'b), but made a mention of this (also) that he wanted a reward for his steps. Upon this the Messenger of Allah said: In fact for you is the reward which you expect.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man from the Ansar who lived far away from Medina and yet still attended all of the Prophet's prayers. His friends suggested that it would be easier for him if he bought a donkey so that it could carry him on his journey and protect him from any dangers along the way. However, this man refused their suggestion because he wanted to remain close to the Prophet and receive whatever reward came with it. When this was reported back to the Prophet, He told this man that his reward would indeed be what he expected. This hadith teaches us about how important proximity is in order for us to receive rewards in our lives - both spiritual and material rewards - as well as how we should strive for closeness with Allah SWT through prayer and good deeds in order to reap its benefits.
