Sahih Muslim 84a (Book 1, Hadith 156) #7421
Belief in Allah and Jihad as Best Deeds

SUMMARY: The best deeds are believing in Allah and striving in His cause, while the best form of charity is to free a valuable slave. If one cannot afford it, then helping an artisan or making something for an unskilled laborer is recommended. Lastly, abstaining from causing harm to others is also considered charity.

Abu Dharr reported: I said: Messenger of Allah, which of the deeds is the best? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Belief in Allah and Jihad in His cause. I again asked: Who is the slave whose emancipation is the best? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: One who is valuable for his master and whose price is high. I said: If I can't afford to do it? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Help an artisan or make anything for the unskilled (labourer). I (Abu Dharr) said: Messenger of Allah, you see that I am helpless in doing some of these deeds. He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Desist from doing mischief to the people. That is the charity of your person on your behalf.

QUICK LESSONS:
Believe In Allah And Strive In His Cause ; Help An Artisan Or Make Something For An Unskilled Labourer ; Abstain From Causing Harm To Others

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaches us that the best deeds are believing in Allah and striving in His cause. Believing in Allah means having faith that He exists and has power over all things; this includes trusting Him with our lives and relying on Him for guidance. Striving in His cause means doing good works such as helping those who are less fortunate than us or spreading knowledge about Islam to others. The second part of this hadith tells us that the best form of charity is freeing a valuable slave if one can afford it; however, if not then helping an artisan or making something for an unskilled laborer is recommended instead. Lastly, abstaining from causing harm to others is also considered charity according to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . All these teachings remind us of how important it is to be kind and generous towards others while also having faith in God’s power over all things.
