Sahih Muslim 15c (Book 1, Hadith 18) #7283
Abiding by Obligations for Paradise

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man asking the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) if he will enter Paradise if he follows the obligatory prayers, fasts during Ramadan, and abstains from what is forbidden.

It is narrated on the authority of Jabir that a man once said to the Messenger of Allah : Shall I enter Paradise in case I say the obligatory prayers, observe the (fasts) of Ramadan and treat that as lawful which has been made permissible (by the Shari'ah) and deny myself that what is forbidden, and make no addition to it? He (the Holy Prophet) replied in the affirmative. He (the inquirer) said: By Allah, I would add nothing to it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow your obligations; Pray five times a day; Observe fasting during Ramadan; Treat that as lawful which has been made permissible by Shari'ah; Deny yourself from what is forbidden according to Islam

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of following obligations in order to gain entry into Paradise. It was narrated on the authority of Jabir that a man once asked the Messenger of Allah whether he would enter Paradise if he said his obligatory prayers, observed fasting during Ramadan and treated that as lawful which has been made permissible by Shari'ah while denying himself from what is forbidden. The Prophet replied in affirmative and upon hearing this, the inquirer promised not to add anything to it. This hadith teaches us that we must abide by our obligations in order to be rewarded with entry into paradise. We must pray our five daily prayers regularly, observe fasting during Ramadan and stay away from all things which are forbidden according to Islamic teachings such as adultery or consuming alcohol etc. If we do so then Allah will reward us with His mercy and grant us entry into paradise on Judgment Day.
