Sahih al-Bukhari 7490 (Book 97, Hadith 116) #7193
Reciting the Quran in Moderation

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the importance of reciting the Quran in a moderate voice, neither too loud nor too low, so that both companions and pagans can hear it.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: (regarding the Verse):-- 'Neither say your prayer aloud, nor say it in a low tone'. (17:110) This Verse was revealed while Allah's Messenger was hiding himself in Mecca, and when he raised his voice while reciting the Qur'an, the pagans would hear him and abuse the Qur'an and its Revealer and to the one who brought it. So Allah said:-- 'Neither say your prayer aloud, nor say it in a low tone'. (17:110) That is, 'Do not say your prayer so loudly that the pagans can hear you, nor say it in such a low tone that your companions do not hear you'. But seek a middle course between those (extremes), ie, let your companions hear, but do not relate the Qur'an loudly, so that they may learn it from you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Find a balance between speaking loudly and quietly while reciting the Quran .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about reciting the Quran in moderation. It was narrated by Ibn 'Abbas and it explains that when Prophet Muhammad was living in Mecca, he would recite the Quran but some of his enemies would mock him for it. To prevent this from happening, Allah revealed a verse telling Prophet Muhammad to recite neither too loudly nor too quietly so that both his companions and his enemies could hear him. This teaches us to be moderate when we are reciting or talking about our faith; not to be overly loud or quiet but instead find a balance between those two extremes. We should also remember that even if people mock us for our beliefs, we should still remain steadfast and continue doing what is right without being discouraged by their words.
