Sahih al-Bukhari 7358 (Book 96, Hadith 85) #7060
Eating What is Lawful

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ was presented with a gift of butter, dried yoghurt and mastigures, but he did not eat it due to his aversion. However, if it had been illegal to eat, he would not have allowed it to be eaten over his table cloth nor would he have ordered that (mastigures meat) to be eaten.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: Um Hufaid bint Al-Harith bin Hazn presented the Prophet with some butter, dried yoghurt (curd milk) and mastigures as a gift. The Prophet then asked for a meal (mastigures etc. to be put) and it was eaten over his table cloth, but the Prophet did not eat of it, as he had aversion to it. But if it had been illegal to eat, it would not have been eaten over his table cloth nor would he have ordered that (mastigures meat) to be eaten.

QUICK LESSONS:
Eat only what is lawful according to Islamic teachings ; Respect gifts given by others ; Allow other people their own choices regarding food consumption .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of eating what is lawful and avoiding what is unlawful. The Prophet Muhammad was presented with a gift of butter, dried yoghurt and mastigures which he did not eat due to his aversion. However, even though the Prophet did not partake in the food himself, this does not mean that it was unlawful for others as the Prophet still allowed them to eat over his table cloth and even ordered them to do so. This shows us that we should only consume what is lawful according to Islamic teachings as anything else will be considered sinful or wrong in God's eyes. We should also remember that just because something may seem unappealing or unpleasant for us personally does not necessarily mean that it is forbidden for everyone else as well.
