Responding to Jewish Greetings

SUMMARY: When greeted by a Jew, one should respond with the same greeting.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Messenger said, "When the Jews greet anyone of you they say: 'Sam'Alaika (death be upon you); so you should say; 'Wa 'Alaika (and upon you)'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be respectful and polite in interactions with people of other faiths or beliefs. Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Muslims should respond when greeted by a Jew. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that when a Jew greets someone with the phrase “Sam’Alaika”, which means “death be upon you”, one should reply with “Wa 'Alaika” which means “and upon you”. This teaches us that we must always be respectful and polite in our interactions with others regardless of their faith or beliefs. We must also remember to treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves.
