Sahih al-Bukhari 6901 (Book 87, Hadith 40) #6634
Asking for Permission Before Entering

SUMMARY: It is important to ask for permission before entering someone's house, as it is wrong to look at what is inside without the permission of its people.

Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd As-Sa'idi: A man peeped through a hole in the door of Allah's Messenger 's house, and at that time, Allah's Messenger had a Midri (an iron comb or bar) with which he was rubbing his head. So when Allah's Messenger saw him, he said (to him), "If I had been sure that you were looking at me (through the door), I would have poked your eye with this (sharp iron bar)". Allah's Messenger added, "The asking for permission to enter has been enjoined so that one may not look unlawfully (at what there is in the house without the permission of its people)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask for permission before entering someone else’s home
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that it is important to ask for permission before entering someone's house. This hadith was narrated by Sahl bin Sa'd As-Sa'idi, who reported that a man peeped through a hole in the door of Allah's Messenger's house and saw him rubbing his head with an iron comb or bar. When Allah's Messenger saw him, he said that if he had been sure that the man was looking at him through the door, he would have poked his eye with the sharp iron bar. He then added that asking for permission has been enjoined so one may not look unlawfully at what there is in another person’s home without their consent. This hadith teaches us about respect and privacy; we should always be respectful of other people’s homes and not enter them without their permission or knowledge. We should also respect other people’s privacy and not try to peek into their homes or lives without their consent.
