Inheritance Rights for Daughters and Sisters

SUMMARY: Mu'adh bin Jabal gave a verdict that half of the inheritance should be given to the daughter and the other half to the sister.

Narrated Al-Aswad: Mu'adh bin Jabal gave this verdict for us in the lifetime of Allah's Messenger . One-half of the inheritance is to be given to the daughter and the other half to the sister. Sulaiman said: Mu'adh gave a verdict for us, but he did not mention that it was so in the lifetime of Allah's Messenger .

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic Laws even if they are not mentioned explicitly in Quran or Hadiths

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about inheritance rights for daughters and sisters. It was narrated by Al-Aswad and Sulaiman who reported that Mu'adh bin Jabal gave a verdict in the lifetime of Allah's Messenger that half of an inheritance should be given to a daughter and the other half to her sister. This hadith teaches us that daughters have equal rights as sons when it comes to inheriting from their parents. It also teaches us about justice in Islam which is one of its core values; justice means treating people equally regardless of their gender or any other factor. Furthermore, this hadith shows us how important it is for Muslims to follow Islamic laws even if they are not mentioned explicitly in Quran or Hadiths because Mu'adh bin Jabal was able to give such a verdict based on his knowledge about Islamic laws without being told by Allah's Messenger himself.
