Sahih al-Bukhari 6725, 6726 (Book 85, Hadith 3) #6469
Property of Allah's Messenger

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's family asking for their share of his property, but Abu Bakr refused to give it to them as he followed the procedure that the Prophet Muhammad had set during his lifetime.

Narrated 'Aisha: Fatima and Al 'Abbas came to Abu Bakr, seeking their share from the property of Allah's Messenger and at that time, they were asking for their land at Fadak and their share from Khaibar. Abu Bakr said to them, " I have heard from Allah's Messenger saying, 'Our property cannot be inherited, and whatever we leave is to be spent in charity, but the family of Muhammad may take their provisions from this property". Abu Bakr added, "By Allah, I will not leave the procedure I saw Allah's Messenger following during his lifetime concerning this property". Therefore Fatima left Abu Bakr and did not speak to him till she died.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow procedures set by leaders/elders, Help those in need wisely using resources available to us

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how Abu Bakr refused to give any of the Prophet Muhammad's property to his family. He followed a procedure that was set by the Prophet himself during his lifetime, which was that whatever wealth he left behind should be spent in charity and not inherited. However, Abu Bakr did allow for members of the family to take provisions from this wealth. This teaches us an important lesson about charity and generosity; we should always strive to help those in need and use our resources wisely. It also shows us how important it is for us to follow procedures set by our leaders and elders, even if they are difficult or unpopular decisions.
