Sahih al-Bukhari 6718 (Book 84, Hadith 11) #6462
Making Expiration for Dissolved Oaths

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that if a person takes an oath and then finds something better than the oath, they should make expiration for their dissolved oath and do what is better.

Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari: I went to Allah's Messenger along with a group of people from (the tribe of) Al-Ash'ari, asking for mounts. The Prophet said, "By Allah, I will not give you anything to ride, and I have nothing to mount you on". We stayed there as long as Allah wished, and after that, some camels were brought to the Prophet and he ordered that we be given three camels. When we set out, some of us said to others, "Allah will not bless us, as we all went to Allah's Messenger asking him for mounts, and although he had sworn that he would not give us mounts, he did give us". So we returned to the Prophet; and mentioned that to him. He said, "I have not provided you with mounts, but Allah has. By Allah, Allah willing, if I ever take an oath, and then see that another is better than the first, I make expiration for my (dissolved) oath, and do what is better and make expiration".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make expiration when you find something more beneficial or appropriate than your original decision .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of making expiration for a dissolved oath. It was narrated by Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari who went to Allah's Messenger with a group of people from the tribe of Al-Ash'ari asking for mounts. The Prophet said he would not give them anything to ride, but after some time camels were brought to him and he ordered that they be given three camels. Some of them thought that Allah would not bless them because even though the Prophet had sworn he wouldn't give them mounts, he did in the end. When they returned to him with this concern, he explained that it was Allah who provided them with mounts and not himself; if ever he took an oath and then found something better than it, he would make expiration for his dissolved oath and do what is better instead. This teaches us that we should always strive to do what is best even if we have taken an oath or made a promise before hand; if we find something more beneficial or appropriate than our original decision, we should make expiration for our dissolved vow and choose what is best instead.
